Is it Front Wheel Main Hub or Bearings?
-> 206 Problems

#1: Is it Front Wheel Main Hub or Bearings? Author: Triggerfish PostPosted: Mon Sep 15, 2014 5:30 am

Before:
Both front wheels can wobble by jacking up the wheels above ground.
Remove wheels, the brake disk can wobble.
Remove brake disk, the outer hub can wobble.

After: (Wheel bearing replaced to both sides)
Once wheel bearings replaced, there were no wobble between outer hub and main hub.
Fit entire hub to shocks, driveshaft and tighten nut.....perfect, no wobble.
Fit wheels.....no wobbles.

Drive over weekend.....perfect.

Jack up wheels above ground: both wheels wobble as before.
Remove wheels, the disks wobbles.
Remove disks, the outer hub wobbles.

(There is no play here for both inner and outer tie rods nor ball joint of control arm)

Anyone?

Ideally, you'd need to do some visual checks.

As the driveshift enters the bearing void, it would be useful to check if the CV joint shows movement at the back of the hub whilst the wheels 'wobble' - if so, then it's likely to be a worn hub, but you'd have noticed that surely when you did the job (assuming you did the bearings yourself?)

Only got the local garage to replace the bearings into the hubs.....and I did the rest.

As mentioned above (Once wheel bearings replaced, there were no wobble between outer hub and main hub.) meaning no play between outer hub to bearings and bearings to main hub.

The play is now visual between bearings and main hub unit.....so I guess the main hub unit (hub which secures the struct & springs part) is worn?
Bearings can't be worn that quick?

Strange enough, both hubs at the same time?....or is this to do with the hub nut not tight enough?

If the inner radius of the hub has worn Idue to long overdue bearing replacement) then fitting a new bearing to a worn surface will be no different a logic than painting a crumbling wall.

Here's an extreme example from an old thread on Passionford (took me a while to find it)

Whilst there's potentially a few possible causes, due to the number of components involved, it's worth checking for play at the rear of the hub - if it's evident that the rear of the driveshaft (at the CV joint) has 'free play', then it only really starts to point to one cause.

This is on the basis that the components already fitted are the correct ones.

The diagrams for example show the only real possible causes based on rear play

It's possible that the Hub Carrier could be worn also, but you'd narrow that down based on visual inspection of the movement.

emmmmm.....took the hub carrier/bearing/hub unit out.

The movement/play is actually on the bearings itself!! (both sides)....and not the hub.
Where the black seal ring is between inner/outer bearing.

That is very odd! How long does a bearing usually last?

Parts should come with a 12 month warranty (sale of goods and all that really) but depends how cheap they were and how they were fitted.
