#1: new 206 gti 138 owner Author: andy83, Location: stoke on trentPosted: Sun Sep 21, 2014 12:39 am ---- alright everyone i recently purchased a 51 plate 206 gti with 106k mileage, it only has part service history but regardless of this i still like to give a car a nice overhaul when i get them.
so i went and got the following yesterday
cam belt kit
drive belt
fuchs titan 5w/40oil and filter
fuel filter
bosch spark plugs
k&n panel filter
sportex oval back box (current one is very tatty and cagged up)
im also going to look at removing the throttle bodie and giving that a clean as it always seems to be something that gets overlooked and makes a car so much smoother on the throttle.
i have a few questions for you good people
where is the best place to get ht leads from as im having no joy looking online?
i understand a common problem is manifold rattle which i picked up on yesterday, is there anyway of curing this either by keeping oe or going to aftermarket? if going aftermarket where is the best place to purchase from?
i also didnt think the brakes were as good as they should be now i know this might just require a disc and pad change but i was wondering if changing to a gti 180 brakes offers better performance?
once i have done all of the above i shall take the car on a hub dyno near to me to see how healthy she is and if all is good am certainly considering a remap
thanks in advance

you know what i was thinking to myself i wonder if they dont use them, first car iv owned that doesnt use them.
iv just been doing a bit of research on the manifold and seen that maniflow do something that could be worth a look
#4: Re: new 206 gti 138 owner Author: Vexs, Location: LondonPosted: Sun Sep 21, 2014 3:16 am ---- I would be inclined to look at engine mounts if your manifold is coming loose before you buy another and even if you do choose an aftermarket option you're still going to want at look at getting some stiffer ones as you'll end up in the same boat with it coming loose.
#5: Re: new 206 gti 138 owner Author: Edward, Location: In the garagePosted: Sun Sep 21, 2014 3:21 am ---- If you need a manifold I have one that's not been used for six years. It's only done 50k miles.

would that be a standard or aftermarket fella?
also looks like you have spent a small fortune on your engine top man, what power etc is it putting out atm?
#8: Re: new 206 gti 138 owner Author: andy83, Location: stoke on trentPosted: Sun Sep 21, 2014 6:19 am ---- i dont suppose there is a guide on here on how to remove the throttle bodie is there?

whilst your in such a helpful frame of mind i dont suppose if you know where you can get a lowering kit of around 35-40mm ?
#11: Re: new 206 gti 138 owner Author: Vexs, Location: LondonPosted: Sun Sep 21, 2014 9:21 am ---- Depends if you just want lowering springs or coilovers?
Would recommend coilovers really as you can go at whatever height you see fit and always adjust it at a later date.
The rears however will need the torsion bar adjusting to get it lowered.
#12: Re: new 206 gti 138 owner Author: andy83, Location: stoke on trentPosted: Sun Sep 21, 2014 9:32 am ---- id like to uprate the springs and shocks at the same time ideally, torsion bar should be a bit easier than doing my old r5gtt lol
#13: Re: new 206 gti 138 owner Author: Vexs, Location: LondonPosted: Sun Sep 21, 2014 9:46 am ---- I couldn't personally recommend any particular brand of lowering springs as I've only ever used coilovers.
I do know Koni do a 35mm lower kit, H&R too, and of course Bilstein but as for what they're actually like I wouldn't know! but you should probably try and stay away from FleaBay special brand if your budget allows you to do so.

id highly doubt that one matey
just wanna put my touch to it and make an already quite decent motor that bit better

quick pic of the new motor
#17: Re: new 206 gti 138 owner Author: Vexs, Location: LondonPosted: Mon Sep 22, 2014 12:38 pm ---- Looks a very clean and tidy example Andy; get yourself a project thread going so we can keep track of what ya get up too once you start modifying
#18: Re: new 206 gti 138 owner Author: andy83, Location: stoke on trentPosted: Mon Sep 22, 2014 2:48 pm ---- Cheers matey will defo do that
Just been out for a little drive after fitting the new stereo and noticed the reverse light not working now I know this could be a bulb or fuse maybe or is there anything else that is more common eg reverse light switch
#19: Re: new 206 gti 138 owner Author: andy83, Location: stoke on trentPosted: Wed Sep 24, 2014 12:38 am ---- finally got chance to have a good check over the engine etc yesterday and have took the car for a bit of a drive by myself, i must say it does seem a very strong torquey engine even from very low down in the rev range it has alot of pull.
now dont worry im never going to preach that the car is a tarmac shredder as im used to 230+bhp retro turbocharged motors eg r5gtt/rs turbo etc but im genuinely quite shocked at how well the little 206 drives/holds the road and a great engine to match.
the k&n panel filter will arrive today so i shall pop that on tonight when the ball and chain gets back from work, again i know these dont add any real power but i do know they just seem to make the response that bit better and less asthmatic. The sportex oval back box should arrive tomorrow so im going to be fitting that friday whilst we are servicing the motor ready for our trip upto the lake district.
got a pic of the car down my drive yesterday
#20: Re: new 206 gti 138 owner Author: andy83, Location: stoke on trentPosted: Wed Sep 24, 2014 10:14 am ---- so i get home from work today and a few goodies have arrived
will be fitting the panel filter tonight, plugs and back box shall be fitted on friday whilst doing the service
#21: Re: new 206 gti 138 owner Author: andy83, Location: stoke on trentPosted: Fri Sep 26, 2014 1:20 am ---- up and at em early this morning getting ready to head off up to gt motorsport to service the car, fitted the k&n weds evening cant comment on what its like as iv not drove the car since.
todays plan is as follows
new cam belt kit
new drive belt
new oil/fuel filters
new oil
new plugs
flush old coolant and renew with fresh
fit new sportex oval back box
if i get time will remove throttle bodie and give that a clean
if a mod would like to move this thread to the progress section that would be great
#22: Re: new 206 gti 138 owner Author: andy83, Location: stoke on trentPosted: Fri Sep 26, 2014 3:59 am ---- Progress going well come across a few things that needed doing.
Centre section of exhaust was completely shot so got a new one from ces in stoke.
Also iv fount out why the brakes have no bite probably has summat to do with both fronts being well past there best so relplacing them.
Throttle bodie was filthy and caked up so thats been cleaned and its now gleaming.
Oil and filter change is done, it seems fuel filter must be in tank so no need for that.
Euro car parts gave me the wrong drive belt so going do that next wkend along with the cam belt as we have gotta set out for the lakes just after dinner.

#25: Re: new 206 gti 138 owner Author: Edward, Location: In the garagePosted: Sat Sep 27, 2014 1:29 am ---- Bends on that exhaust aren't so great.

#32: Re: new 206 gti 138 owner Author: andy83, Location: stoke on trentPosted: Wed Oct 01, 2014 10:40 am ---- iv fount the reverse light problem to be the reverse light switch so ordered a new one and will be fitting it this weekend
on another front iv now ordered a maniflow 4-1 manifold and a pair of powerflex bushes for the engine mounts and started to get the bits required to convert to the 180 inlet manifold, iv purchased a 306 gti 6 throttle bodie and icv. just gotta get the inlet and 180 alternator now.

it seems like the other one i ordered was for the 1.4 engine so it looks as if powerflex only do the one bush for the engine mount?
#37: Re: new 206 gti 138 owner Author: andy83, Location: stoke on trentPosted: Wed Oct 01, 2014 11:18 pm ---- going off the diagram it looks as if its the rhs engine mount, so ill need the gearbox mount/bush still and superflex/powerflex dont do them so id imagine i need to get a vibratechnics one?

Will be interesting to see what shes got still.
#44: Re: new 206 gti 138 owner Author: andy83, Location: stoke on trentPosted: Thu Oct 09, 2014 8:43 am ---- another update for you all, iv decided to go for a supersprint exhaust manifold thats designed to fit the oe cat, so less hassle etc etc, we are limited for the amount of time the car can be off the road as the wife uses it for work each day.
iv also ordered a set of kw -40mm lowering springs this should still keep the ride height practical but give it a much better stance, and ordered the vibratechnics gearbox engine mount, im hoping to fit the manifold/mounts and lower it in 1 day then the wife can have it back to get to work.

4-1 manifold best for flow. one on Gumtree 50 quid a couple days ago .. then get it remapped for best results . Mrs aint gna be happy lol . Took me 4 hr exhaust manifold to cat fitted & welded.
Ive contacted 2/3 tuning comps and they will not help further after they are told of my first remap .
Ring psi .make sure they will run the car again & be able to remap it after your mods . If you go first like i did .after map i Fitted mods & no remap ! Wtf . Anyone out there in southwest ??
What price is your remap at psi remap ?

iv just come from a 242bhp 229lb/ft 12 second 1/4 mile renault 5 gt turbo that was my money pit for years and before that a 189bhp thottle bodied mg zr, im not after any figure chasing with the 206 just improving on the restrictive parts of the engine and if it gains a bit of power along the way then happy days

icv Gti-6 . Ive seen a icv for a gti-6(xu10) xsara vts .
It sits on the manifold . Its got a plastic housing and its a L shape with a inlet and out let for idle air .
Im sure you could use it & put a pipe into manifold or drill a hole like the gti6 1 ,fix it to the manifold .
could fix it anywhere and run a pipe to let air in to the manifold after the throttle body .

iv also fitted a new pair of bosch 21" aero wipers as the old ones were coming to the end of there life, much better now. whilst i was at it i fitted the new numberplates with new screws and caps which has really made a nice difference as the old ones were tatty with rusted screws/missing caps etc, i could only remove one screw with a screwdriver the other 3 had rusted up completely but they were removed none the less.

im certainly not exited matey one thing i will notice is no more rattling from the exhaust manifold
#75: Re: new 206 gti 138 owner Author: andy83, Location: stoke on trentPosted: Thu Nov 27, 2014 11:50 pm ---- well as always plans dont always come to light
last saturday some kind person decided to kick the drivers side mirror off the car whilst my wife was at work in it, so i ordered a replacement unit off ebay and was promised it would be here tuesday, it finally turned up last night so i was straight out to fit it in the pitch black took me all of about 15 mins :), out of interest i had the wife ring a couple of local garages see what they would charge £55-70 ouch crazy prices.
so the billet pulley and manifold has been put on hold until new year now and who knows i might even have the billet flywheel to go with them as well
#76: Re: new 206 gti 138 owner Author: andy83, Location: stoke on trentPosted: Sat Jan 17, 2015 11:33 pm ---- finally got the billet bottom pulley fitted to the car also changed the back discs and pads and did a fluid change, much better now thats for sure.
up next is the mot on the 26th jan then a visit to my mate at gt motorsport on 23rd feb to fit the supersprint manifold and uprated engine/gearbox mounts.
i have also managed to get hold of a de cat for the car and will be fitting a sportex centre section at the same time the manifold is fitted

I would honestly avoid the sportex stuff if you could mate, had my full cat back system on all of maybe 6-8 months and it was already starting to corrode.
You would be better having one made up or sourcing elsewhere in some better material.
Coming along nicely though Andy considering you've had it all of what? 5mins no honestly, good to see you making solid progress it's gonna be awesome once you finish!
#78: Re: new 206 gti 138 owner Author: andy83, Location: stoke on trentPosted: Sun Jan 18, 2015 2:19 am ---- Hi mate cheers for that i had a sportex many moons ago 13 years to be exact and that was pretty robust.
but i will always take on board previous expwriences from fellow owners. I was originally toying with the idea of a supersprint centre section so maybe i should go for that instead.
Haha yeah there is a method to my madness dont you worry about that
#79: Re: new 206 gti 138 owner Author: Vexs, Location: LondonPosted: Sun Jan 18, 2015 2:51 am ---- Perhaps it was just poor luck with mine then or poor build quality, who knows! but if your looking for guaranteed longevity then the supersprint centre section is where it's at in my opinion.
Up to you though mate was just my 2cents on recent experiences with the sportex brand
#80: Re: new 206 gti 138 owner Author: andy83, Location: stoke on trentPosted: Sun Jan 18, 2015 2:53 am ---- No i will defo take your advice as your experience is far more recent than mine.
I will keep the sportex back box on for now and keep an eye on things.

Fit manifold ? Its forsale ? Hoffmans middle section is good . Cheep but does the job & aint no skinny black painted pipe ready to rott out
. Dont spend ££ on a middle section . What Size pipe comes off the supersprint flange ?
#82: Re: new 206 gti 138 owner Author: andy83, Location: stoke on trentPosted: Sun Jan 25, 2015 12:28 am ---- right then people got quite a few updates for you
first of all i have purchased a billet flywheel from pug1off, looking forward to fitting this should work well combined with the crank pulley.
i have purchased a new k&n filter and water sock for my k&n typhoon, the ones on atm are well past there best especially the water sock.
iv scrapped the idea of sportex centre section and de cat, im not at all happy with the quality of the sportex back box which is already corroding.
so iv been on to my old mates at top gear stockport who did an amazing job of my old r5gtt turbo back 2.5" system to make me a full custom manifold back decatted longlife system.
and finally engine wise i have got a pair of cat cams fast road sport profiles that will be fitted in around march time with fingers crossed a fast road spec head from ctm performance, and of course finished off with a remap
#83: Re: new 206 gti 138 owner Author: andy83, Location: stoke on trentPosted: Tue Jan 27, 2015 10:30 am ---- car passed mot yesterday with not even 1 advisory very happy with that
thought i would share the latest part to arrive with you all
very nice piece of kit and only weighs 4.4kg much lighter than the original
#84: Re: new 206 gti 138 owner Author: andy83, Location: stoke on trentPosted: Mon Feb 09, 2015 10:50 am ---- got a few updates that i forgot to add on here so ill put them all into one and date them
30/12/2014
so i decided to drop the wife off at work today so that i could fit the k&n typhoon induction kit which i got a great deal on and fit a new pair of bulbs in the rear numberplate lights.
induction kit was a doddle to fit didnt take long at all
29/01/2015
new k&n filter fitted with new water sock arrived today, will be fitted onto the typhoon this sunday
03/02/2015
so had a bit of a setback with the car, the wife informed me it had starting making some kind of noise sunday morning so when we went out that evening i heard it for myself and narrowed it down to 1 of 2 things.
i got onto my mate at gt motorsport to see if he could have it in yesterday which he kindly did, i couldnt do it myself due to being at work from 7am until 5.30pm.
anyway it turned out to be the waterpump was shot and looks like it had been bodged on sometime in the past but it finally give us chance to fit the new cam belt kit and also new alternator belt so every cloud and all that.
#85: Re: new 206 gti 138 owner Author: andy83, Location: stoke on trentPosted: Fri Feb 13, 2015 10:01 am ---- bit of a better update for you all, today i received a couple of pics of the fast road head iv had done by charlie at ctm performance looks spot on and iv already had it port matched for a 180 inlet manifold, just waiting on the catcams to arrive and then we can get on with fitting the lot all in one go and getting it mapped up.
most importantly i have to say a massive thank you to fellow forum member macj who has been nothing short of a legend in helping me out with various things including the cams and this fast road head, this forum is very lucky to have such a member and long may it continue
#86: Re: new 206 gti 138 owner Author: macj, Location: EssexPosted: Fri Feb 13, 2015 1:00 pm ---- Many thanks Andy for the kind words. I look forward to seeing it mapped

Going to be very interesting to see what it brings should certainly add to it in all the right places without taking away the original characteristics of the engine.
#88: Re: new 206 gti 138 owner Author: andy83, Location: stoke on trentPosted: Sun Feb 15, 2015 12:14 am ---- i received a few more pics of the fast road head last night also on macs gas flowed head thread
this combined with the cams /inlet and gti6 tb should transform the flow of this engine
#89: Re: new 206 gti 138 owner Author: lip_88, Location: wolverhamptonPosted: Sun Feb 15, 2015 4:40 am ---- Very interested in this thread great progress look forward to seeing the results
#90: Re: new 206 gti 138 owner Author: andy83, Location: stoke on trentPosted: Sun Feb 15, 2015 5:25 am ---- Glad you're interested matey.
If i had the time/resources etc then i would dyno the car one mod at a time to see how it does.
I will pop it on the rolling road after fitting the 4-2-1 manifold to see where were at before fitting the head cams and inlet

Be interesting to see what it makes but more importantly how different you find it is to drive I imagine itl feel very eager to rev
#92: Re: new 206 gti 138 owner Author: andy83, Location: stoke on trentPosted: Sun Feb 15, 2015 8:25 am ---- With it being a daily motor for the wife the plan is to retain the original characteristics of the engine hence my choice of cams etc. Just want a bit more of it in the same areas. I honestly think everytime i drive the car my god peugeot didnt half strangle this engine
#93: Re: new 206 gti 138 owner Author: andy83, Location: stoke on trentPosted: Tue Feb 17, 2015 10:05 am ---- nice little update got home from work last night to find these waiting for me once again huge thanks to macj for sorting me out an amazing deal on these
also i got home just in time tonight to catch the parcelforce van with the fast road head so i have all the bits here to start improving this engine
#94: Re: new 206 gti 138 owner Author: 206gt160, Location: BlackburnPosted: Tue Feb 17, 2015 1:17 pm ---- Where are the part markings on the cams? Could you post them up please. Just so that I know where to look for them on my cams. Great thread by the way. How much did you pay for flywheel

#97: Re: new 206 gti 138 owner Author: andy83, Location: stoke on trentPosted: Fri Feb 20, 2015 9:32 am ---- finally getting around to fitting the 4-2-1 manifold uprated engine/gearbox mounts and billet flywheel on monday, looking forward to getting it done as this will be the first steps in releasing some of the potential of the engine, also will finally have rid of that bloody annoying rattle from the oe manifold
#98: Re: new 206 gti 138 owner Author: Carlos_WR1, Posted: Fri Feb 20, 2015 9:45 am ---- Is the Supersprint Manifold you have a straight fit or does it need any kind of customization?
Also the Supersprint Manifolds seem much more expensive than your typical copy one off ebay. Are they much different? Im assuming the supersprint one is made of thicker guage steel and better quality?
Im curious as ive been looking at a 4-2-1 manifold for my GTI
#99: Re: new 206 gti 138 owner Author: andy83, Location: stoke on trentPosted: Fri Feb 20, 2015 9:50 am ---- im pretty sure its a straight fit just a bit of welding required possibly. i will let you know for sure after monday.
yes they are much more expensive than the ebay ones etc, the quality of them is spot on and i know they spend alot of time extensively testing all of there systems for optimum performance etc
if i was you id get one of the ebay ones as i know macj runs one of them on his rally car with no bother at all

Cheers, think that might be my next purchase. Th clutch release bearing has gone on mine and cambelt is sue so this month it will be those getting replaced. Im putting a stage 1 clutch on in anticipation of some mods and so i dont have to mess around again later on.
#105: Re: new 206 gti 138 owner Author: andy83, Location: stoke on trentPosted: Sat Feb 21, 2015 3:31 pm ---- if your doing the cambelt then get the full kit with tensioners etc and also worth doing water pump at same time.
i will be running the oe clutch how long it will last i dont know as through the sketchy paperwork i have for the car there is nothing in there saying the car has had a new clutch but that doesnt mean it has not been done, i did a shed load of work on my old 5gtt which obviously didnt show up on the paperwork.
#106: Re: new 206 gti 138 owner Author: andy83, Location: stoke on trentPosted: Sat Feb 21, 2015 3:33 pm ---- im hoping to pop the car on psi tunings rolling road again after fitting the 4-2-1 manifold and of course iv fitted the kn typhoon since last dyno run, will give me a good base figure before the proper mods go onto the car
#107: Re: new 206 gti 138 owner Author: andy83, Location: stoke on trentPosted: Mon Feb 23, 2015 10:38 am ---- well the car was dropped off by the wife to my mate at gt motorsport in stoke this morning to have the 4-2-1 manifold/ billet flywheel and uprated mounts fitted, i was hoping to be going up and helping out myself but i had to go into work to get a job done which had been bought forward.
anyway not long after he got a good look at it he rang me to say this is going need a bit of work to fit and will require some custom exhaust work, well i was already planning on getting a manifold back decatted system fitted once the manifold was on.
my mate makes his own systems there so he is going be making me a decatted system from manifold back for less than half of what longlife wanted so a win win situation and it gets the system done a couple of months earlier than planned

#109: Re: new 206 gti 138 owner Author: andy83, Location: stoke on trentPosted: Tue Feb 24, 2015 10:21 am ---- got a call off my mate at gt motorsport this morning telling me the car was done, he stayed till 8.30pm last night to get 90% done. the wife will be picking the car up at 9am tomorrow and i probably wont drive it until saturday so wont be able give any updates until then, but iv been informed it sounds F'in lovely
anyway heres a few pics sorry there are no better quality ones or even a few more but i had to rely on my mate to take them
billet flywheel fitted
one of the uprated engine/gearbox mounts fitted
4-2-1 manifold fitted onto custom made stainless decatted centre section
