#1: Clicking noise as wheel/drive shaft rotates on Peugeot 206? Author: JasonN0815 PostPosted: Wed Oct 01, 2014 8:25 pm

Peugeot 206
2001 (Y Reg)
1.4 LX
8 valve
115,000 Miles

Okay so I recently brought this from a classified near me, all ran okay on the test drive, all worked out okay.
However re started hearing some clunks recently, and the gears were a bit, stiff. Replaced the Gearbox Oil, was about 1L underfilled. And found the inner O/S CV Boot needed refitting, so re-filled with grease and clipped that back on.

That solved the issues mainly (Still a few knock here and there, but think that's just general things with the age of the car).

We took it to Halfords and Kwik Fit to get a free check over. And both said the N/S Suspension arm had a slight play in the bushings, and the Exhaust is hitting against the brake hose, which explains the clunking left over.

Whilst it was in the air however, the guy spun the N/S wheel, and there was a clicking sound (He did it too fast for me to hear if it was per revolution or not), almost like, the spinner things they have on game shows with the pointer or so.
He then held a screwdriver on the gearbox, and put his ear on the other end, and told me it was coming from the gearbox. But, I'm not really, too sure with that "test"?

All I could think it would be is a wheel bearing, but, I couldn't hear a humming when steering from left to the right.
It's not the Inner or Outer CV joints, I've checked those. It could explain the slightly loose suspension arm, and a slight uneven tyre wear and slight tracking issues my little pug has. Thanks guys!

Just to add in. I didn't think its a gearbox issue as, the gearstick doesn't have a large amount of free play, so its not the selector rods. Not the synchromesh's as the gears all go in fine, reverse is a little stubborn sometimes, as can be 1st, but believe this is quite normal, with there being a weaker sychro? And I believe gearbox issues are often more, clunky and, mechanical and, brash, than just, clicking.
I think when he used the screwdriver as a stethoscope, it was just sound traveling through metal.

Not 100% sure if it's a wheel bearing though because I can't hear any humming noise. Or could it be a tracking issue, Brakes all seem fine. Getting slight clunks at the front over pot holes, used the full lock steering test for the Cv's though, and boots all in good condition?

Any ideas? Thanks all

You could do a full MOT history search, and see what parts have failed and replaced etc in recent years.

How did you resecure the CV boot? IIRC the inner boot has VERY little clearance between the boot and gearbox casting.

I may not be remembering it correct and if it isn't the gearbox casting that is close I am sure something is VERY close to the shaft that the boot clip will strike if it isn't a proper (very thin) clip.
