#1: 206 diesel engine keeps cutting out Author: drakkos PostPosted: Tue Nov 18, 2014 11:11 am
    ----
Hi all

I bought a Peugeot 206 HDI diesel a while ago second hand. Worked perfectly for a month or so and then the engine started struggling as I was driving. I couldn't drive it in fourth gear, so I had to drop it down to third - any time I nudged it over about 2000 revs it would seem to stall but never actually fully cut out. Five minutes or so later, the problem was gone.

I thought it was just one of those things, then a month later the same thing happened when I was driving up an A road - this time it was worse, and the engine cut out fully. It would start up again, but I couldn't get it over 1000 revs without the engine and handbrake light coming. I left it for about ten minutes and it recovered well enough for me to drive it home.

I took it to a garage, who diagnosed it as a fuel cylinder problem and replaced them at a cost of 450 quid. I thought it was fixed, as the car was driving a good deal better, but a month after that the exact same problem occurred.

It's been to Peugeot themselves and an auto-electrician since. Nobody can see any actual problems with it - it is a great car most of the time, and I'd be very happy with it if it weren't for this borderline lethal quirk.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to what it might be?

Many thanks in advance.

Which HDI engine is it then as there is a choice of 3 been fitted to the 206.

1.4 HDI ( Much better then the 1.6 HDI is the only thing going for it )

1.6 HDI 16 valve ( Worse engine PSA Peugeot / Citroen ever made! )

2.0 HDI ( bulletproof )

Also what year of 206 is it as there are 2 totally different electrical systems used.

Hi there - many thanks for replying. I don't know much about cars unfortunately, so apologies if I'm not providing the right information. Here's what I have:

Model: PEUGEOT 206 2.0D (04 ON) 5DR SPORT HDI
Year of manufacture: 2005
Cylinder Capacity: 1997cc

Hope this is enough.

Its a 2.0 HDI then, best diesel engine option for a 206.

When the engine hits whatever rev threshold it'll cut out at, the engine light and the handbrake light will briefly illuminate on the dashboard, but it won't stay on once I remove my foot from the accelerator (idling or otherwise). I'm told by the auto-electrician and by Peugeot that there's nothing of interest in the computer with regards to faults, at least since the fuel injector was replaced.

Were all fuel injectors replaced?

Just the one that was faulty, AFAIK. The others were working fine, I was told.

When my 1.6 did this, it was the EGR valve.

Must say that the 1.6HDi gets a lot of hate but it isn't that bad (once the piece of crap DPF is removed and the engine remapped accordingly...)

there's a common fault on the 2ltr hdi, whereby there's a yellow conector, below and to the right of the oil filter that goes to the fuel pressure sensor, where the the wires break or gets mucked up, causes the problem you describe, had the problem myself a while back.

Worth a check.

I thought it was injectors etc.
