#1: 206 LX Auto 1400 petrol accelerator kills engine Author: blueaeshna, Posted: Tue Nov 25, 2014 2:57 pm ---- Hi everyone, I've been reading through as many threads as I can to try and get info on this problem as it seems to be baffling both me and my Peugeot dealer plus its costing me a mint in the process There are many folk with similar issues but not quite the same.
Car is as in topic title, year 2003.
Car worked fine til a month or two ago then I noticed it feeling a bit lumpy at the bottom of hills occasionally and after roundabouts. It still doesn't seem to have problems in dry weather. The problem got worse once the rainy weather started but clears up again on dry days. At its worse the engine stalls completely but will always restart first time, but when the engine picks up there is a discharge of white smoke from the exhaust. Dashboard lights only appear if engine dies completely, all other electrics still function it seems.
I had had a new exhaust fitted a short while before I noticed the problem but it had run ok for a while.
Peugeot diagnostics comes up clear of error codes, so far they have changed timing belt, water pump, plugs, coil pack and the cost is racking up but I can't afford to replace a car I otherwise love and running out of money and ideas, so suggestions of things to have checked next welcomed.

#2: Re: 206 LX Auto 1400 petrol accelerator kills engine Author: Seatock789, Location: MorecambePosted: Wed Nov 26, 2014 2:39 am ---- Sounds like the dealer doesn't know what they are doing and just throwing parts at it, if none of these has solved the problem then I'd be asking them to re-fit the original parts and get my money back.
White smoke from the tail pipe generally indicates that water is entering the cylinder and trying to be burnt with the petrol, hence the white smoke.
It could also be over-fuelling which will cause too much fuel to be injected which will bog down the engine.
I'd look for a 2nd opinion as it sounds like they don't know what they're doing.
#3: Re: 206 LX Auto 1400 petrol accelerator kills engine Author: blueaeshna, Posted: Wed Nov 26, 2014 4:12 am ---- Thanks but unfortunately its back with them this morning as I was intending to drive to work but the car was almost impossible to drive so I limped it through the traffic as far as the garage and thats where I left it and got the train, shaking like a leaf it was so terrifying stopping in the middle of busy junctions etc. But typical, its now showing no faults. I'll pop in this evening and try and talk to the tech guy who is looking at it. It was more difficult to restart this morning but it kind of has a split personality, when it works fine its fine. When it decided not to work this morning it definitely produced steam from the exhaust even on tickover, I went round the back to sniff it and put my hand over it, didn't smell of oil and not an excess of water on my hand. Even putting it from parking mode into gear seemed to kill it and with an auto you can't really rev it, but the smoke would clear the next minute and engine was smooth again, its like something's cutting in and out and causing this to happen.

Sounds like the engine is being suffocated. My guess would be the intake behind the arch, give it a check, make sure there is no water sitting in the pipes/ gaining access and being soaked up or restricting air flow, would also explain it being worse in wet weather too. Easy to do, and don't need to pay a garage to do it either.

The timing belt was due for renewal anyhow and the water pump bearing was on its way out but having spent that money I would like a functioning car back. I have read that throttle potentiometer/stepper motor can cause engine cut outs at random, but would it have these symptoms and could damp/humid weather affect this? Thanks for your suggestions anyhow.

It was discovered that water was collecting in the pipe under the air filter and being sucked into the engine hence wet weather making it worse. Air filter was also wet which didn't help. Apparently this is a bit of a U shaped pipe and water collected in the bottom. They drilled a small drain hole and water poured out, plus replaced air filter. The sensors were all ok. Cheap fix in the end. Hope this info helps somebody else.
