A little help would be appreciated with this problem which my local (Portsmouth) peugeot dealer has never seen.

My daughter phoned me to say her car wouldn't start and the battery was completely dead.
I jump started the car and drove it around for about an hour and a half.
I turned the ignition off and apart from the key turning nothing happened. I tried another couple of times and eventually stalled the car to get it to stop. Battery voltage was steady at 12.6V. I restarted the car and moved about 50 yards down the road and turned the ignition off. It worked.
Restarted the car and could no longer switch it off.
Even with ignition switch off and engine stopped (stalled) all the normal dash lights remain on. I had to pull the centre multiplug out from the engine fusebox to kill the car.

I have two possible targets to consider
1. Ignition switch
2. Ignition on relay (which i assume is an integral part of the engine fuse unit.
Pulling the fuse on the engine fuse unit does stop the engine but does not switch off the car (dash lights still on)
Any help or advise would be greatly appreciated

As you've suggested it could indeed be a faulty ignition switch which is the culprit as the car turned off after restarting it. I'm not sure about the second possibility.

Hasn't had a brake light bulb replaced recently?

This happened to a friend of mine on his 206. Apparently it was (as the AA chap described) "fluff" in the ignition barrel that caused a rogue connection not allowing the ignition to disconnect when turning it off. He'd done the same with stalling to stop the engine and got a flat battery as a result as the lights on the dash were all still on. Had to clean the ignition barrel out and it was fine after. Compressed air can or similar should do the trick if it's the same sort of thing. Best of luck sorting it.

Hi
Problem resolved.
Obtained an Engine Compartment Fuse Unit (BSM B2) from a local breakers and fitted. Ignition key now turns the engine off and the internal fan now works again.
Conclusion. Engine on relay (d) which is an integral part of the fuse unit was stuck in the energised position.
