I am getting the chime to say the key is in the ignition with the door open.

Could I have a bunch of wires that may have rubbed and split so causing short circuits on the above problems with short circuits

Cams are also turning.

Am I right in thinking that the crank shaft would be the only one that would prevent the car starting out of the faults found or could the tps prevent starting altogether as well. Thought this would just give irrational revving

A faulty crank sensor would not tell the ecu the position of the crank, so ought prevent starting? Have you checked the wiring for it! The sensor is on top of the gearbox, in the block.

Clear the faults and see which ones come back. There only interment ones.

I tried removing this and cleaning it with no look but I can not get a decent image on google to see if I am at the correct sensor. I will have to clear the faults again on Saturday to see which ones come back but I was sure it came back with crank sensor and tps faults.

A dodgy crank sensor would prevent starting yes.

How would pp2000 tell me if the imobiliser was on or not.

Bsi says no faults and ecu is unlocked (is the ecu unlocked imobiliser off)
I get a chime when the door opens with key in ignition so again bsi seems ok.

Pump primes but when the fuel pipe is disconnected from the rail and ignition turned no fuels floods out, also no spark

I need to check the tps to see if the voltage goes up smoothly on opening the throttle 0.4 to around 5v is what I should see as well as a permanent 5v and a permanent 0v. Would a faulty tps sensor prevent the car starting.

Could well be broken wires I will go over them saturday

Have you checked whether the cams are turning over?

He said Cams are turning at top of this page.

Yes the cams are turning, but not very fast. I am unsure on how fast they should turn, surely it is slow until the engine turns over and revs pic up.

I am going to check the crank sensor on saturday, does this sit ontop of the gearbox itself or on the block?

Also I will be stripping down the tape and insulation of the main loom to check for faulty wiring.

Crank sensor is only intermittent and when cleared I dont think it came back up I will check saturday.

what should the crank sensor wiring read, is it a two wire 0v and 12v supply I should be seeing on the plug?

Cams will turn slowly off key. Faster they turn ,higher the rpm .

Not to sure on the voltage of the crank sensor or what it should read ..

Check n trace the cable .
Long as there is a complete circuit & volts . It should be ok ..
Good luck .

Crank sensor sits on the top of the gearbox almost just behind the thermostat housing, 10mm bolt holding it in place. It sit's downwards pointing towards the flywheel. It does sound like a crank sensor fault. Had exactly the same symptoms on a GTi 138 a couple of years ago, went to pull the sensor out and it came out in bits. New sensor in, fired first turn of the key. That started by cutting out on the road.

Even without starting the cams should turn quickly. I'd be looking at a slipping belt as well.

Thanks for the info lads I will get on with it on Saturday and see what the outcome is.

How quickly are we talking

Quick enough you wouldn't want to touch. A car on idle runs at about 750 revs a min, so similar to that.
