Taking power from the cigar lighter socket now wipers run

#1: Taking power from the cigar lighter socket now wipers run Author: OlversPeugeot PostPosted: Sat Dec 27, 2014 10:16 am

As per the Halfords advice I have tagged into the purple wire feeding the cigar lighter to provide power for a new Sony stereo. I have used the additional wiring harness that Halfords sold me. I cannot see where anything can be plugged in the wrong way. I had time to set the DAB radio channels and then the wipers started working and the headlights lights came on without the switch being used. Now the wipers have stopped the lights won't work and the engine won't fire. The engine turns over, the dash lights up and just one sidelight works.
All relevant fuses are intact, unless there are even more that I haven't been able to find/check yet, but the Haynes manual has guided me to a lot already?
IS there a fundamental problem with tapping into the cigar lighter purple wire?

Why not just swap the wires behind the headunit over?

Sorry but Laughing

Should have come here FIRST for advice.

Year of your 206 please as there are 2 totally different electrical systems used & the wiring is completely different.

Get the feeling it's going to be multiplexed.

Multiplexed then which means digital CAN VAN electrical system controlled by a software driven computer brain ( BSI unit )

You will have ( hopefully ) blown the fuse in the cabin fuse box that the immobiliser circuit also shares with the radio, that's why it will turn over but not fire.

There is no need to hack in to the cigar wiring for the radio & its not recommended fiddling with the wiring on a multiplexed PSA Peugeot / Citroen product as you can easily damage the BSI unit.

Swop the red & yellow wires around on the back of the new head unit OR get the proper Peugeot / Citroen multiplexed radio adaptor harness ( less then £10 ) from any Peugeot / Citroen main dealer parts department.

Thanks I will follow your advice and when I then get a good result then ask Halfords how they feel about wasting my precious Saturday.

to be fair its incredibly rare to get somebody in halfords with half a brain..........it does happen and the odd one can be very knowledgeable, most of them have the same knowledge of cars and things as my dog

The forum also has a handy guide for radio / ICE information:

All sorted now thanks to Mr BSI, you pointed me to the exact fuse and now we've removed the power feed from the cigar lighter , the stereo all works perfectly. Now to re-educate Halfords. I don't yet blame the 2 separate individuals that insisted I needed to take the power feed as it seems more likely Halfords have specifically given them the wrong instruction.

Meanwhile, I'll come to you guys first, next time I need to improve this car, or just keep it going.

As an audio fitter for Halfords, what they told you at that store was wrong, when we wire them in, we run a lead to the fuse box and spur off of the cigar lighter fuse (using Autoleads BSFDUAL) to give a switched ignition! Glad you've sorted the issue now, not all Halfords workers are clueless muppets lol, some of us know our stuff Wink

There is no need to spur of any fuse on a 206, its just a bodge!

PSA Peugeot / Citroen even sell a radio adaptor harness for less then £10 so an aftermarket radio can be safely & correctly fitted to the cars original wiring.

I'm not getting into any argument but you have to do it on a lot of newer cars anyway with all the can bus wiring (207/corsa's etc etc) so it's just as easy to run it that way on a 206, no bodge it's all fused and running correctly how Autoleads intended
