#1: 206 GTi 138 - Clutch Recomendations Author: LeeThr, Location: North West WalesPosted: Tue Jan 13, 2015 2:19 pm ---- 03 plate GTi 138, I think my thrust bearing is on the point of shitting itself big style. Started making some extremely horrible noises last night. New clutch kit time.
Just wondered if anybody had any recommendations on a decent clutch kit for it?
Also is there anything else I should be replacing whilst I have the box off apart from the driveshaft seals?
Regarding the flywheel I know it would probably be best to whip it off and give it a skim. But I do have a 180 flywheel sat in the garage, would it be worth me getting that cleaned up & skimmed and throw that in with it instead? Or should I just stick with the standard 138 flywheel?
Thanks for any input

Been looking at the Valeo kits. Seen a Valeo kit for £78 delivered.

Cant really go wrong with any of those 3 brands, there all decent quality.

It's still on the original clutch at 98K, the thrust bearings been making a noise since I bought the car, I knew it was a job coming before I even took ownership. Just a shame as the clutch itself isn't slipping. But I'd rather get the job done & out of the way in my own time so I can avoid the hassle of it leaving me stranded on the side of a road miles & miles away from home.
Any advice on the flywheel?
#6: Re: 206 GTi 138 - Clutch Recomendations Author: MrBSI, Location: What's it to you? ? ?Posted: Tue Jan 13, 2015 2:51 pm ---- Flywheel - I've never had to change one, normally they clean up ok with a bit of brake cleaner.
Not sure if your BE box is similar to the MA but I do remember also changing the input shaft bearing, bolts on to the outside of gearbox.
#7: Re: 206 GTi 138 - Clutch Recomendations Author: LeeThr, Location: North West WalesPosted: Tue Jan 13, 2015 2:57 pm ---- Might just give that a go then, will have to find the numbers for the flywheels and see if the 180's significantly lgihter to warrant changing it.
And regarding the bearing, would that be number 2 here....
#8: Re: 206 GTi 138 - Clutch Recomendations Author: MrBSI, Location: What's it to you? ? ?Posted: Tue Jan 13, 2015 3:05 pm ---- Have a look at Peugeot part number 2105 35 - Clutch Buffer Guide bush £17.59.
#9: Re: 206 GTi 138 - Clutch Recomendations Author: LeeThr, Location: North West WalesPosted: Tue Jan 13, 2015 3:15 pm ---- Found it
Will get one of them as well ready for when I drop the box.
#10: Re: 206 GTi 138 - Clutch Recomendations Author: MrBSI, Location: What's it to you? ? ?Posted: Tue Jan 13, 2015 3:18 pm ---- Always worth changing when doing the clutch kit, they do wear a fair bit & get damaged over time.
#11: Re: 206 GTi 138 - Clutch Recomendations Author: LeeThr, Location: North West WalesPosted: Tue Jan 13, 2015 3:20 pm ---- Okie dokie, thanks
Need to do the timing belt as well, Thinking it might make life easier if I pull the box off then do the belt as I'll be able to move the engine further over for more access.

#13: Re: 206 GTi 138 - Clutch Recomendations Author: LeeThr, Location: North West WalesPosted: Tue Jan 13, 2015 3:45 pm ---- And don't worry I wont be making a thread about not being able to lock the engine in place I have access to a set of the Laser Timing tool kit for the EW engine
#14: Re: 206 GTi 138 - Clutch Recomendations Author: Addaz, Location: SuffolkPosted: Tue Jan 13, 2015 4:43 pm ---- You need to fully strip the box to access the input shaft bearing. BEs have no issue with the bearing though mate
Just dont loose the washer behind the nose cone!! Ive bloody done it and killed my paddle clutch! They are £46 plus vat as well

Cheers, will make sure I keep my eye on that one then. You got any input on what I do with the flywheel? Do I just clean up the 138 one or do I throw the 180 one in?
#16: Re: 206 GTi 138 - Clutch Recomendations Author: Addaz, Location: SuffolkPosted: Tue Jan 13, 2015 5:34 pm ---- Are they larger diameters? If not i wouldnt worry, i may consider a paddle clutch as you did say about future engine upgrading

Not so sure about diameter, I think the 180 one is a tad lighter than the 138. I'll have to pull the one out of my scrap 138 lump and weigh them both.
#18: Re: 206 GTi 138 - Clutch Recomendations Author: LeeThr, Location: North West WalesPosted: Wed Jan 14, 2015 5:25 am ---- Well the thrust bearing decided to well and truly s**t itself this morning, and take out the crank sensor with it. Picking up an LUK clutch this afternoon for £86.26 + VAT. Car will be back on the road by this evening.

Serves me right for trying to be organized about it all. Could guarantee if I hadn't have given it so much as a second thought it would have lasted until next week when I was planning on getting it up on axle stands for a couple of days.
Ah well, ive got a couple of good crank sensors lying about. Few hours in the garage this afternoon and it'll be good to go again.
#21: Re: 206 GTi 138 - Clutch Recomendations Author: David1156, Location: East LondonPosted: Wed Jan 14, 2015 9:15 am ---- Had the same problem myself. The clutch was fine but the cable and thrust bearing failed. I don't reckon it's possible to get an uprated thrust bearing in general?
#22: Re: 206 GTi 138 - Clutch Recomendations Author: MrBSI, Location: What's it to you? ? ?Posted: Wed Jan 14, 2015 9:21 am ---- Right hand drive GTI is a hydraulic clutch so there isn't a cable to worry about - just a slave cylinder instead.
The standard thrust bearing with a decent brand of clutch kit will be fine.
#23: Re: 206 GTi 138 - Clutch Recomendations Author: Steve206, Location: UKPosted: Wed Jan 14, 2015 4:01 pm ---- Bit of grease on the input draft for the bearing doesn't hurt either. I replaced my salve cylinder as well when I did mine. Old one had a leak in it somewhere. Had to bleed it every few months.
#24: Re: 206 GTi 138 - Clutch Recomendations Author: LeeThr, Location: North West WalesPosted: Thu Jan 15, 2015 3:03 am ---- Well this is what came out of the bell housing, all that was left from my thrust bearing and crank sensor....
Took me about 5 hours from getting the car off the floor to it coming back down. Just need to find my spare radiator now and change that, box came out a slightly awkward angle and just managed to catch the very corner of the radiator. But other than that everything else went smoothly. Not a bolt short or a bolt left over either
