Alternator overcharge
-> 206 Problems

#1: Alternator overcharge Author: jonnyg2k5 PostPosted: Tue Jan 20, 2015 3:26 am

I had an issue where by the alternator stopped charging the battery. I figured that I had no 12v signal to the exciter wire from the plug in the engine fuse box. Have temporarily put a switched +ve onto the exciter wire and it charges now but can over charge, up to 16v! My question is, is there a fuse for the exciter circuit? And also does the ecu turn off alternator charging from time to time under normal running to prevent over charging or is my alternator goosed as it should never charge that high? Please help!

There should be a charge regulator on the alternator. Probably easiest just to replace the alternator.

Not to hard. Aux belt off, might need to drop aircon pump first. Easily done on ramps though

Dam alternator from eBay (genuine pug) has two bolt on posts as opposed to one post and a two pin connector. Can I still use this?

Do the part numbers match. Should be two to bolt to the engine block. You'd have to check the connector. Is it 2nd hand?
