Stamped VIN placement?

#1: Stamped VIN placement? Author: mtempsch, Location: Gothenburg, Sweden PostPosted: Tue Jan 20, 2015 9:36 am

Our equivalent to MOT just denied my boss' car due to unclear vehicle identity (2001 GTi 140 owned by him from new) Apparently they've received new directives to be stricter on this (issue has not ever been mentioned before).

Going by what I've found through Google, the VIN should be stamped into the metal on the top right of the piece behind the rear bumper.

My 2003 180 has got it there, but his 2001 140 has not. Instead there's a plate riveted to the same piece of metal, a little lower, on the inside of the trunk. It's also got the plates by the right front light, and the one visible through the glass at the bottom left of the windshield.

Has that ever been a configuration 206's have left the factory with? Or was this car damaged during shipping to the dealer and 'quietly' fixed?

Is there any other place on the car where the VIN is stamped into the metal?

Should be one on the passenger side of the boot catch, it'll also have security marks either end to stop tampering.

I think *) we're talking about the same location, on the narrow flat top of the piece the boot catch mounts to, to the right of the catch (about between the end of the lic. plate and the rear light, about where the '206' logo is on the lid) as you stand behind the car looking into the trunk.

*) Passenger and driver side, as well as off/near side, can be a bit confusing w/o further specification as most of the folks on the board mean that for UK style RHD cars, driving ob the left, while the car in question is a LHD, driving on the right

That's where there's nothing stamped on his car, but a riveted plate, just 'over the edge', on the inside of the trunk on the vertical part of the same piece, by the cutouts to where the tire iron is stored.

See if there is one inside the boot compartment underneath the boot catch itself, it'll be mounted upside down.

'Mounted' you say? Do you mean a plate or actually stamped into the metal?
A plate would be a no go with our MOT equivalent - at least without some documentation/certification that it was done like that due to damage/repair.

Yer it's a silver plate riveted on.
Seems strange it's not stamped in the boot though, pretty sure all 206's since production began had a stamped VIN in the boot.
Would they really not accept the factory stamped plate in the boot? After all that's the way it came out the factory as did the stamped plate by the headlight!?

Has it had a new panel welded in? Has it not got a vin number in the windscreen?

The car has (while in his ownership, 1st and only after dealer) never been in a crash, so no - no welding work that we know...

It's got the two other plates - windshield and by the right front light and we're probably talking about the same plate inside the trunk..
I guess the reasoning goes that the car could have been crashed, another similar one stolen and the riveted plates moved over along with electronics and locks... Makes a more sense for something a bit more costly than a 206.

He was going for a chat with the dealer and see if some clarity can be gained. From what I gathered from his end of the phone conversation before I had to leave, apparently they have the equipment to put in a stamp, for a fee of course, if they're happy it's the same and proper car.

Of course, raises the question why it wasn't done (possibly laxer rules at the time) or at least documented, if the car was damaged during shipping to the dealer...

Remove the rear seats & look to see if the whole boot skin is one whole sheet .
From the boot to down over the petrol tank is one no joins .

Does these rule apply in uk ?
My car has no vin in the boot . Its been repaired .
Its in the window & front engine bay .
