#1: Cooling fan problems Author: l3ighl3igh, Posted: Mon Jun 22, 2015 1:23 am ---- Hi there. Hope you can help!
I have a 2002 206 gti. My engine cooling fan stopped working and with help from posts I 'd read on here, we diagnosed and fixed the problem which was a corroded wire in the little green box. Excuse my techy terms
The fan now clicks on as the temp reaches the next marker after 90. I have noticed though that the fan is not coming on when the air con is turned on and I cant hear those clicking noises that I used to hear.
Did we miss something in the green box, or is this something else? My dad did test the resistors which were good.
Thanks for any suggestions you may be able to give

Thanks for the reply We didn't do that, wouldn't know how to.
From what I can gather, my fan has 2 speeds. Low speed should come on when air con is on which it is not. High speed should come on when engine is getting hot, which it does. So it appears my fan is only half working
#4: Re: Cooling fan problems Author: Sim, Location: West CountryPosted: Mon Jun 22, 2015 5:47 am ---- sorry misread your earlier post thinking fan only clicka and never actually spins . Clicks are the green boxes = relays, there should be two - one for high, another for low speed
#5: Re: Cooling fan problems Author: l3ighl3igh, Posted: Mon Jun 22, 2015 11:50 am ---- Thanks again. We only found one corroded wire in green boxes, which was repaired and now the fan works on high speed. Didn't see any other problems :/
#6: Re: Cooling fan problems Author: Sim, Location: West CountryPosted: Mon Jun 22, 2015 1:25 pm ---- swap the two boxes around
#7: Re: Cooling fan problems Author: jbhensoniii, Posted: Wed Jun 24, 2015 10:57 am ---- Can you tell me where the green box is or point me to a photo. I am having a similar problem where my fan isn't coming on at all and ill try doing this if I can find it.
We changed the thermostat, and sensor unit but the fan doesnt function properly. The temp is staying around 90 and the temp used to be around 80 most the time. The fan used to kick in at 85 or 90 low speed and higher speed when in traffic. It doesnt appear to come on at all now.

Hi, sorry for the delay! Which boxes do we need to switch around?
Thanks for the reply, been googling like a mad woman and finding nothing
#10: Re: Cooling fan problems Author: Leegsi, Location: Near PortsmouthPosted: Thu Jul 02, 2015 3:34 pm ---- The 2 relays behind that cover
Thanks I'm sorry if I sound dim but could you elaborate a little please? Did we put the relays back in the wrong places? I guess I am just not understanding how it would make a difference as there didn't appear to be a right/wrong way for them to go back in. I am by no means questioning you, I would just like to try and understand what we did wrong :/ Thanks again
#12: Re: Cooling fan problems Author: Sim, Location: West CountryPosted: Thu Jul 02, 2015 6:45 pm ---- One of the relays might be gone. If that's true, then if you swap them around, you should lose fan at one speed and gain another instead, and vice versa
#13: Re: Cooling fan problems Author: l3ighl3igh, Posted: Sun Jul 05, 2015 1:30 am ---- Thank you's for the help with this. The fans are now functioning, for the most part.
I have one last question.
The fan does not come on when I turn the A/C on. I haven't had the system re gased for years at least. I have it booked in on tuesday for a service and re gas. I've tried to find some info and from what I have read is the air con wont engage if it is empty. Am I correct in coming to this conclusion and would this in turn cause the fan to not come on or is there a bigger problem with the air/con (such as something mechanical)?
Thanks again
#14: Re: Cooling fan problems Author: Sim, Location: West CountryPosted: Sun Jul 05, 2015 3:58 am ---- I thought the fan comes on at low speed also when engine gets hot (and switches to high speed when engine gets really hot )
Could someone confirm?

My low speed fan comes on just before the next marker after 90. The high speed fan comes on at the marker after that.
It is my understanding that the low speed fan should also come on around 20 seconds after the A/C is turned on (I read this somewhere so may be wrong) which it does not.
It's doing my head in, these fans. Just want to be sure now that they are fixed, that they are working correctly
#16: Re: Cooling fan problems Author: Sim, Location: West CountryPosted: Sun Jul 05, 2015 3:26 pm ---- So what made your low speed fan come on? What did you fix? I'm curious as per this thread
I'm driving around without any fan at all (nor A/C), so can't help with A/C, sorry

I had corrosion in both relay boxes. Stupidly, when first looking for the problem and not fully understanding how the fan works, we found one wire that had turned to dust, fixed it and put everything back together.
Thanks for your replies. Will have the A/C serviced tomorrow and hope for the best
#18: Re: Cooling fan problems Author: jbhensoniii, Posted: Thu Feb 25, 2016 8:30 pm ---- where were the wires corroded? Do you have pictures? I want to know where exactly to check for corrosion?
#19: Re: Cooling fan problems Author: Edward, Location: In the garagePosted: Thu Feb 25, 2016 8:46 pm ---- Check them right at the end where they connect to the relay.
