#1: seized torsion bars Author: Sim, Location: West Country PostPosted: Tue Jun 30, 2015 10:12 am

Just wanted to cry out on a shoulder of giants Very Happy

Having read all tens of forum topics on the subject, but my 15yo torsion bars wouldn't even budge
  • Doing it myself for last 3 days
  • soaked with WD40
  • yesterday switched to Plus Gas - spraying periodically
  • DIY socket extractor tool just keeps bending bolts
  • used paint stripper gun to heat up bar ends, hosing with cold water immediately -did that several times - no progress at all
  • Drums are on jacks cpl of mils up..
  • Got a sledgehammer and trying whacking it out as hard as is possible.. but is cumbersome as I have to hold the extension bit in place with another hand.. what else

Will need to call a mate to help holding the 1/2in ratchet extension whilst I whack with sledgehammer, but honestly running out of ideas, trying to use brainz first, of what's left that is.

Slide hammer would be nice, but hard to source; I would be fine at least if driver's end started to move, and pushing out opposite trailing arm off the ARB - not even that's happening

And I haven't even started on the bottom one, still doing the top bar from driver's side first, as per recommendations

Anyone around Bristol area could pop round? I'd really need this done until Sunday, or I guess I could put everything back on and drive up to a knowledgeable torion bar breaker - the bars will have already soaked the plus gas, making your job a tad bit easier Smile

Cheers me dears!

All you need is a 2nd pair of hands holding a flat ended metal bar (smaller than the torsion bar) then a sledge hammer.

It wouldn't budge, trying to whack it out like mad, it's seized for good

Blow torch time (any tips on exactly what and how needs to be heated?) I'll shield off brake lines and remove abs lead

Put the screws back in if hitting the bars otherwise you'll dent the bar ends

Thanks Edward, good I had a taper kit before listening to your wise advise Smile

One week of bashing, and I gave up (though not the torsion bars sadly). Last resort was heating bar ends with blow torch for 5mins then screwing in 10.2 strength bolt over a socket - nada.

Here are the victims (will write up full experience in the build thread at some point)

I struggled to get mine out even when they'd been put in with copper grease on the splines. The axle was off the car too so access was easier. Plusgas for a week and plenty of heat got them out eventually.
