Car looses power and cuts out
-> 206 Problems

#1: Car looses power and cuts out Author: alec_game PostPosted: Thu Aug 13, 2015 7:56 am
    ----
The problem started a few months ago. Occasionally when I would be sat waiting at a junction or traffic lights etc I would go to pull away and the car would have no power jerk a bit and then cut out. The first few times it happened I thought I was stalling it which was weird but it did kind of feel like that.

After a while the car would not always cut out but it would loose power and the exhaust would make a 'put put put' noise and no matter how much I had my foot on the accelerator the revs would stay low and the car would try to cut off.

This has been going on for a while and I began to notice that the problem occurred after a certain amount of time from starting it up. For example in the mornings when I go to work after a couple minutes on the road is when the problem would occur, but only from a still position never whilst i was moving. I also noticed that once the problem happened once in a day it wouldn't happened again for the rest of the day unless the car had be sat somewhere for a number of hours. This is also why it happens every morning because it gets left for 12 hours over night etc.

Now what I have to do is sit in the car and warm the engine up, wait a couple minutes and I have noticed when the car gets to around a certain point on the temp gage thats when the problem kicks in. What I am essentially doing is 'tricking' the car into thinking I am driving, stop, driving etc then once the problem has occurred and the car has thrown its hissy fit I can then go out on the road and not have to worry about anything. I have to do the same when I finish work in the evening.

I have managed to record it happening. At 2:36 on the video the car revs itself just above 10 and the the problem happens. If you watch it the sound isn't great so try to watch it with head phones and turn it up loud. (link below)

I've been to halfords with it and so far they have done nothing to help the issue but I have some how ended up paying out over £500 on repairs that were meant to have fixed it...

If anyone has any idea whats going on please help! I don't know what to do

Thank you!

Firstly - dont go to Halfords, if you need a mechanics help, id go to a proper garage.

If i were you i would clean the throttle body, it would also be worth looking at the idle control valve.

At a certain temp the heat must expand the manifold ..
Sounds exactly what happened to me.

Its on top of your gearbox, follow the black cabling from your battery. To access cable you may need to lift the battery out, just make sure you follow the correct way about disconnecting the battery there is a guide on here in the how-to
