#1: 206 gti misfire and rough running Author: Jongizzle PostPosted: Wed Aug 26, 2015 2:17 pm

Hi all,

I have the 138bhp model started running rough, it does not idle on release of the throttle it will just cut out, if I hold the revs on at normal idle speed it will misfire badly popping also, but if I give it a foot full the engine sounds sweet ?
I tried to drive it but it's ni impossible when I let the clutch out it will jerk badly. I've hooked it up to the computer but only getting a fault code for the MAP sensor surely this is not causing problem ? I reset the code em light now off but it's still running like s##t

Any help please

Thanks for reading

The fact it runs fine at WOT probably means it's nothing fundamental, so sensor is likely.

At WOT the car is deliberately running rich in open loop mode. When you're idling or cruising the ECU works in closed loop mode, using the MAP and lambda sensors to determine how much fuel to put in. Sounds like not enough fuel is getting into your engine, and if you are getting a MAP sensor error, my guess is that the ECU thinks there is less air than there really is and is adding less fuel. Causing the engine to run lean and misfire.

Ok thanks for your reply, So I'll try the map sensor tomorrow and post back. I don't mind buyin the sensor but I've been told that it's the throttle body also the valve could be bent ??? I'm no mechanic but I don't wanna spend money on a car that's shot. If the map sensor don't work I will be breaking

Just to add it did throw codes up for lambda sensors also, would this of been because of the MAP or should these need replacing also ?

Now lambda is what I was thinking when I read the symptoms because if that is gone then it will be telling the ECU it is running rich when it isn't and then you'll defnintely experience these issues. If I were you I'd test the lambda sensor or replace it before touching the MAP

MAP sensors aren't cheap either when I last looked. Which is why Ecosse nicked mine all those years ago.

The MAP can do such a fault.

Hi, all replaced the map sensor today and still no change. It was a used but genuine one, removed the codes and within a few minuites it sprung back on. The guy at the breakers mentioned it could be the actual wires to the map sensor could be at fault ? I've have a good look but nothing seems broken ?

Also the mechanic round our way said he thinks it's the throttle body ???? Surely I would have a different code for this ????

Any advice is much appreciated also thanks for the guys for your input. It's driving me mad and slowly turning into a money pit
