What is the purpose of those small clips on the brakepads?

I just changed pads and rotors on my 206. In the process I messed up two of the brakepad "clips". The clips I'm referring to is these small springs/clips at the bottom of the picture here (not my picture)

So one of my pads are now missing the two clips. My question is: Does it matter? What function do they have? If they are important, are there any place I can buy these clips separately?

Sorry for my english, I’m not from the UK.

So as long as I lube/grease the sides on the brake pad, I should get the same effect?
