Service mileage indicator fault

Car: 2002 206, 1.4 8v, petrol.
For the last couple of weeks the service indicator (spanner icon) has been doing its own thing with the mileage countdown. Dropping 500 miles every 2 days, even if I haven't driven it? Getting fed up of resetting it. Did read somewhere on the net that the distance setting for the service can be set by taking your finger off the button during reset while the countdown is on and tapping in the mileage wanted. Tried that and nothing happened, just reverted to normal sequence ie 'Oil levels and total mileage'. Haven't fiddled with the electrics apart from disconnecting, removing and reinstalling Lambda sensors when I changed the close coupled cat. I'm baffled (not difficult)

Service Intervals arent just based on mileage, they are also based on date from previous service whichever comes soonest. Are you sure the interval timer isnt calculating the service due based on date from last service as opposed to mileage if you havent yet hit the mileage limit?

It's only been doing this for the last two weeks. Prior to that it was indicating normally. Hadn't been reset for a few months. Thought the values had changed and it was counting down in minutes. :>} I'll have a fiddle with the button press sequence tomorrow as per various 'How to's' on the net. Thanks for the reply, Dan
