#1: Wet footwell and an abs light Author: Pugpug77, Location: GlasgowPosted: Thu Apr 07, 2016 6:52 am ---- We have just purchased a 2008 1.4 look and when I removed the mats for cleaning i realised the passenger footwell is wet any idea where to start looking at where the waters coming in? It has 62k on the clock
Also the battery was disconnected to charge it and when it was reconnected the abs light was on?
#2: Re: Wet footwell and an abs light Author: FrankAteMyName, Location: TewkesburyPosted: Thu Apr 07, 2016 8:06 am ---- For the ABS light try dropping the driver window, sut all doors, disconnect battery, wait 15 mins, reconnect battery and then lean through driver window and turn sidelights on (Do not open doors or boot etc.) This is known as a soft BSI boot and this procedure should always be followed to prevent risk of major damage to the car's computers - try that and let me know the outcome.
The wet footwell will be due to a leaking heater matrix or leaking pipe to the matrix. Common leak point is where the plastic pipes coming from the bulkhead join the matrix (In pass footwell to the right - can't really miss it - will be warm if car was running). Dry all the plastic and run the car for a while (might have to drive for a bit) and see where gets wet first. If it's the pipes then you need new O rings (OEM part is £15 for pipes and O rings although generic O Rings can also work). If the matrix itself is leaking then you will need a new matrix installed. It is possible to do this without removing the dash, contrary to what people will tell you, but it is quite a fiddly job.
Hope that helps.
#3: Re: Wet footwell and an abs light Author: FrankAteMyName, Location: TewkesburyPosted: Thu Apr 07, 2016 8:37 am ---- The part number for the heater matrix pipes and O Rings: 6448.L1 (Usually about £15 from dealer)
#4: Re: Wet footwell and an abs light Author: Pugpug77, Location: GlasgowPosted: Thu Apr 07, 2016 8:41 am ---- Yeah am pretty sure it's coolant on the floor the header tanks empty
#5: Re: Wet footwell and an abs light Author: FrankAteMyName, Location: TewkesburyPosted: Thu Apr 07, 2016 10:11 am ---- If you can locate the leak then I can help you repair it - just keep the header tank topped up with water
And any news on the ABS light?
#6: Re: Wet footwell and an abs light Author: Pugpug77, Location: GlasgowPosted: Thu Apr 07, 2016 2:08 pm ---- Cars currently off the road anyway after a minor bump so picking up a new matrix tomorrow and o rings friends coming to help me replace it
Haven't tackled the abs yet I'll probably start that after the matrix is replaced
So far today I've stripped the bumper and stuff off to see how bad the damage is will need to be trawling the scrap yards this weekend looking for replacement parts
#7: Re: Wet footwell and an abs light Author: FrankAteMyName, Location: TewkesburyPosted: Thu Apr 07, 2016 3:01 pm ---- Personally I wouldn't waste the money on a matrix unless it's definitely the issue but entirely up to you
#8: Re: Wet footwell and an abs light Author: Pugpug77, Location: GlasgowPosted: Thu Apr 07, 2016 3:12 pm ---- So is it likely to be just the pipes?
#9: Re: Wet footwell and an abs light Author: FrankAteMyName, Location: TewkesburyPosted: Fri Apr 08, 2016 12:34 am ---- I've done 7 of these and 6 were the pipes - Well not the pipes exactly but where the plastic pipes join the plastic matrix cap. This is a known weak link and the join utilises wedge shaped O Rings to try and get a good seal: for that reason if you replace them with generic O Rings you may want to double stack them which is bad practice but a decent bodge. When I work on someone else's car I always suggest changing the pipes over as these come with the OEM O rings - the dealer won't sell them to you on their own.
#10: Re: Wet footwell and an abs light Author: Pugpug77, Location: GlasgowPosted: Fri Apr 08, 2016 2:23 am ---- Yeah only problem I have is I can't get them till Monday as there not a stocked part
#11: Re: Wet footwell and an abs light Author: FrankAteMyName, Location: TewkesburyPosted: Fri Apr 08, 2016 2:36 am ---- I fixed mine with a double stack of gneric O Rings from toolstation or one of those type shops - worked for me on my last 2 cars with no issues to date. Stick a bit of vaseline on each ring before installation if you choose to go that way, makes everythinig work a little better. Generic O Ring set will be less than a tenner from pretty much everywhere (I got a 280 piece one for £4) from toolstation on a Sunday so that was a lucky save.
If you need instructions on how to do this change then just ask - I'll post a how to with photos if you need it.
#12: Re: Wet footwell and an abs light Author: Pugpug77, Location: GlasgowPosted: Fri Apr 08, 2016 3:09 am ---- Ok am gonna give this a bash today with the generic ones for a heater matrix and pipes am looking about £70 when really it could just be the o rings it's got to be taken apart anyway might as well try this first!
#13: Re: Wet footwell and an abs light Author: FrankAteMyName, Location: TewkesburyPosted: Fri Apr 08, 2016 3:36 am ---- When you drain your coolant and disconnect the matrix hoses from the engine side of the bulkhead, give the top plastic pipe a good blast with a hosepipe if you have one. This just means that when you disconnect the pipes in the footwell you only spill water instead of a considerable amount of coolant. It's not necessary but it helps.
A brief rundown consists of:
1. Ensure car is cold
2. Open expansion tank cap
3. Remove bottom rad hose (drain into a bucket or washing up bowl or something if no drain pan)
4. Give expansion tank a good blast with hosepipe to flush system
5. Same again but in top of rad (need to remove hose)
6. Remove 2 rubber matrix pipes going into the bulkhead and screw (T20 I think) between the 2 protruding pipes
7. Remove glovebox (Bunch of T20s IIRC)
8. Get in the nice, wet, oily footwell
9. Undo the T20 (Maybe T15) screw fastening the 2 plastic pipes onto side of matrix assebly
10. Undo the philips screw clamping pipes to matrix pipes (only 1 - looks like there should be more)
11. Now the fiddly bit - there are 2-4 plastic clips on matrix assembly that hold the matrix (Big rectangle plate) in place - pull these back and try and slide the matrix out of the housing. It will budge eventually
12. Pull pipes toward bulkhead and bull matrix away from pipes
13. Hey presto water everywhere and pipes are free.
14. Replace O Rings and reassemble
15. Fill coolant and bleed system
16. Dry the footwell and try and remove the remaining oil
Hope this helps
#14: Re: Wet footwell and an abs light Author: Pugpug77, Location: GlasgowPosted: Sat Apr 09, 2016 6:43 am ---- Job done! But my heater matrix was leaking so it's changed and new o rings now to turn my attention to the abs
#15: Re: Wet footwell and an abs light Author: FrankAteMyName, Location: TewkesburyPosted: Sat Apr 09, 2016 10:32 am ---- Do you know anyone with PP2000? (Peugeot planet) or some other eobd reader will do it
#16: Re: Wet footwell and an abs light Author: Pugpug77, Location: GlasgowPosted: Sat Apr 09, 2016 10:40 am ---- My neighbour does but he's not an easy man to get hold of! If I have too I'll call someone out to check for fault codes I've been sourcing new parts to replace the bashed bits at the front only need to find a bumper now
#17: Re: Wet footwell and an abs light Author: FrankAteMyName, Location: TewkesburyPosted: Sat Apr 09, 2016 1:42 pm ---- It's a shame you're so far away - I've got literally all the bits you needed but couriers are annoying when it comes to car parts. Keep us updated with how it goes and wish you all th ebest
#18: Re: Wet footwell and an abs light Author: Pugpug77, Location: GlasgowPosted: Sat Apr 09, 2016 2:29 pm ---- Got the bumper support and grill in the same paint code from a local scrap yard unfortunately the bumper was worse than our one so we're trying a repair to see if that can tide us over till we source one so will put it all together tomorrow and then it's just MOT prep and the abs light of course lol
#19: Re: Wet footwell and an abs light Author: Pugpug77, Location: GlasgowPosted: Sun Apr 10, 2016 9:11 am ---- The soft bsi reset didn't help with the ABS light any more suggestions greatly received!
#20: Re: Wet footwell and an abs light Author: FrankAteMyName, Location: TewkesburyPosted: Sun Apr 10, 2016 3:43 pm ---- I'd suggest getting your fault codes read personally. Other than that you could check out the reluctor rings and sensors. They have a tendency to rust from the inside out on most cars
#21: Re: Wet footwell and an abs light Author: Pugpug77, Location: GlasgowPosted: Mon Apr 11, 2016 3:30 am ---- Yeah have someone coming on Wednesday to read the codes fingers crossed I get answers
#22: Re: Wet footwell and an abs light Author: FrankAteMyName, Location: TewkesburyPosted: Mon Apr 11, 2016 4:30 am ---- Best of luck mate - There is a good code index on here that tells you exactly what the codes mean (assuming the car wants to play ball)
#23: Re: Wet footwell and an abs light Author: Pugpug77, Location: GlasgowPosted: Mon Apr 11, 2016 7:32 am ---- On another note the car only has one key the remote isn't working on it and upon opening it one of the switches is broken I have ordered new switches and will replace the battery is it easy to program my the key to the car again or am I looking at having a new key made for the car?
#24: Re: Wet footwell and an abs light Author: FrankAteMyName, Location: TewkesburyPosted: Mon Apr 11, 2016 8:00 am ---- If you have an owner's manual the procedure is stated in there.
If not I'll need to know which key type you have
#25: Re: Wet footwell and an abs light Author: Pugpug77, Location: GlasgowPosted: Tue Apr 12, 2016 5:15 am ---- No hand book with the car and as for key type I don't know that either the cars a 2008 if that's of any help?

There is also a guide here on how to re-sync the key on both pre-plex and multi-plexed models
#27: Re: Wet footwell and an abs light Author: Pugpug77, Location: GlasgowPosted: Tue Apr 12, 2016 8:20 am ---- So mines is likely to be a multi plex?
I really need to get another key made for it too only having one key is asking for trouble
#28: Re: Wet footwell and an abs light Author: FrankAteMyName, Location: TewkesburyPosted: Tue Apr 12, 2016 8:22 am ---- Thanks for that info Macca.
Yours will indeed be a multiplex. And quite right - I'm also driving around with just the one key at the minute and hating every second of it lol
#29: Re: Wet footwell and an abs light Author: Pugpug77, Location: GlasgowPosted: Tue Apr 12, 2016 9:13 am ---- We also have a 54 plate 206 we've had for about 4 years will that manual help me here?

Never gotten my head around the UK plate thing but anything from a 2002 (switchover year was 2001) or later would be multiplexed and basically the same, apart from trim level/features
#31: Re: Wet footwell and an abs light Author: MrBSI, Location: What's it to you? ? ?Posted: Tue Apr 12, 2016 12:49 pm ---- 54 plate will be a car first registered for use on UK roads between 1st September 2004 until 28th February 2005.
#32: Re: Wet footwell and an abs light Author: Pugpug77, Location: GlasgowPosted: Tue Apr 12, 2016 3:49 pm ---- Ok will dig the manual out!
Contacted a few places about getting a new key and they say I need to contact Peugeot for the code for the key local dealer want £20 for the privilege!!
#33: Re: Wet footwell and an abs light Author: Pugpug77, Location: GlasgowPosted: Wed Apr 13, 2016 10:50 am ---- New switch soldered into key new battery and it just worked straight off no need to sync it
#34: Re: Wet footwell and an abs light Author: FrankAteMyName, Location: TewkesburyPosted: Thu Apr 14, 2016 2:05 am ---- Excellent job. Can be quite a fiddly solder job if you've never done surface mount before. Although the switches are about as large as SM goes
#35: Re: Wet footwell and an abs light Author: Pugpug77, Location: GlasgowPosted: Thu Apr 14, 2016 5:29 am ---- New number plates arrived today and code reader hopefully can get this wee car finished over the weekend
#36: Re: Wet footwell and an abs light Author: Pugpug77, Location: GlasgowPosted: Wed Apr 20, 2016 5:20 am ---- Well the ABS pump is seized hence the ABS light so from what I gather I need an ABS pump and ECU
