#1: 1.4 hdi overheating, is it head gasket? Author: thng33, Posted: Wed Jun 22, 2016 11:40 pm ---- bought a 04 plate 1.4 hdi a month ago, 80k miles on it. had it serviced seemed everything was fine. car has always run a little hot, i thought, since it ran at 90-100 or 80-85 when driving a bit slower.yesterday night on the highway i was pretty much topping it out when i noticed the temperature was red and stop sign flashing at me. i pulled over right away, engine stayed in hot for maybe 1 to 2 minutes. after 10 minutes the temperature was back to 90 but since that incident the engine has been running quite hot. its now regularly running at ~ 120 and if pushed it will get into red again. is this the head gasket?

Is both rubber radiator pipes getting hot after running?
#3: Re: 1.4 hdi overheating, is it head gasket? Author: thng33, Posted: Thu Jun 23, 2016 11:10 am ---- dont see oil in the header tank, havent checked about the pipes, how would i check these, just with my fingertips?
#4: Re: 1.4 hdi overheating, is it head gasket? Author: southwestchap, Location: DevonPosted: Thu Jun 23, 2016 11:16 am ---- yeah just by touch,
give it a rev and see if any bubbles appear in the tank.
#5: Re: 1.4 hdi overheating, is it head gasket? Author: MrBSI, Location: What's it to you? ? ?Posted: Thu Jun 23, 2016 12:17 pm ---- Is the cooling fan working?
Diesel run cooling then petrol & its rare for the cooling fan to cut in during normal driving.
Cooling fan wiring rotting out is a known weak point on the 206.

at what temperature do i check for bubbles? any temperature? do i literally open the cap to look or do i keep it closed? sorry for dumb questions
Take cap off, start and leave car running for 10 minutes or so. Generally once the engine is climbing up through the temperature.
#7: Re: 1.4 hdi overheating, is it head gasket? Author: thng33, Posted: Thu Jun 23, 2016 4:14 pm ---- i can see the water moving when its revving, not sure if its bubbles. both pipes coming off the radiator are hot indeed, fan is working

#9: Re: 1.4 hdi overheating, is it head gasket? Author: gazza82, Location: South BucksPosted: Fri Jun 24, 2016 9:44 am ---- Try the sensor first ... my 1.4hdi did that .. scared the sh*t out of me until I realised that the engine wasn't that hot ..
Realised it was the sensor when it started doing it before I'd even got out of the driveway!!!
Disconnect sensor, pull circlip out holding it in to housing, pull sensor and stick thumb over hole to minimise coolant loss, stuff new sensor back quickly, place clip, replace connector.
#10: Re: 1.4 hdi overheating, is it head gasket? Author: thng33, Posted: Fri Jun 24, 2016 12:22 pm ---- the heaters do blow hot air at me when i turn everything off. not sure its the sensor because it stays around 100-110 when driving normally and only starts overheating after 10 minutes of spirited driving

flush the coolant and make sure nothing is jammed in front the radiator.
#12: Re: 1.4 hdi overheating, is it head gasket? Author: thng33, Posted: Fri Jun 24, 2016 1:46 pm ---- left pipe coming from the radiator is slightly cooler if that matters. water level doesnt look like has gone down even though the needle has hit red 3 times now. i immediately turn it off every time, once the engine has been off for 10 minutes its back to ~110
#13: Re: 1.4 hdi overheating, is it head gasket? Author: thng33, Posted: Fri Jun 24, 2016 1:47 pm ---- could be the sensor, there are laser that measure temperature right? if i point that at the radiator pipe how accurate would the reading be?
#14: Re: 1.4 hdi overheating, is it head gasket? Author: gazza82, Location: South BucksPosted: Fri Jun 24, 2016 1:56 pm ---- Close enough .. or cheaper option is a thermometer in the header tank?
#15: Re: 1.4 hdi overheating, is it head gasket? Author: thng33, Posted: Fri Jun 24, 2016 3:59 pm ---- nope sensor doesnt lie, its overheating like s**t. ill flush the water but i dont think the problem lies there
#16: Re: 1.4 hdi overheating, is it head gasket? Author: MrBSI, Location: What's it to you? ? ?Posted: Fri Jun 24, 2016 5:37 pm ---- Thermostat jammed shut?
Pressure cap working correctly?
Cooling fan working correctly?
Temp sensor working correctly?
#17: Re: 1.4 hdi overheating, is it head gasket? Author: Steve206, Location: UKPosted: Mon Jun 27, 2016 4:51 pm ---- Water pump could have failed. Only need a few broken impellers and the water won't flow well.
#18: Re: 1.4 hdi overheating, is it head gasket? Author: thng33, Posted: Tue Jun 28, 2016 1:02 pm ---- radiator is hot in some spots and completely cold in others, ill replace it and see if that fixes it
#19: Re: 1.4 hdi overheating, is it head gasket? Author: thng33, Posted: Thu Jun 30, 2016 3:26 pm ---- that fixed it. car now runs at 80-85 no matter what. thanks for the help everyone
