Speedometer dropping occassionaly
-> 206 Problems

Uh-oh... it happened once before, about a week ago, and today it happened again so I'd like to ask you guys for some help.

I have a 2002 Peugeot 206 cc, which as the title states has a speedometer needle that occassionally drops to zero.

During those times, the following things also stop working:
- Odometer;
- Mileage calculation in the on-board computer;
- Speedometer needle.

The following things continue to work:
- Fuel indicator needle;
- Rev meter needle;
- Oil temperature needle;
- Cooland fluid temperature needle.

So from what I've heard, all post 2001 Pugs 206 have multiplexed speedometers, however the speed input device can vary from being the ABS system to the gearbox? Then I'm wondering whether the issue could also be due to the speedometer itself, i.e. if replacing the entire speedometer cluster might be a solution?

How would one go about diagnosing which part is messing things up?

Very rare for a multiplexed cluster to fail.

It sounds more like a speed sensor issue.

Service Box + VIN will show if yours is old fashioned speed sensor OR ABS fed.

For future reference: your thinking was probably spot on! My local garage replaced the speed sensor (which was situated near the gearbox in mine) and it hasn't dropped once so far. Fingers crossed... Rolling Eyes
