Knocking when braking
-> 206 Problems

#1: Knocking when braking Author: Switch PostPosted: Thu Dec 22, 2016 9:15 pm
    ----
Hello peeps!

Today I encountered a quite big problem on my car.

I started it and drove away. I braked lightly, for a turn, and suddenly there was a loud knocking/banging, like in rotation with the wheel, and the braking pedal was banging against my foot. Car braked harder than it should.

Braked slightly harder, and it completely went away.

This went on for a while. Went back home, and at the last turn I braked again, and it the banging didn't go away when braking harder this time.

Some side info: Knocking gets slower the slower I drove. Car engine was cold, didn't drive yesterday, but the day before that there was no knocking/banging.
On the handbrake it did the same knocking/banging and harsh braking. So I think back wheels, though it sounded like it came from the front. (Tried it just to see what it would do)
Car is on steel wheels, original, didn't have issues with it.

The closest garage here is right around the corner but it was closed, and I didn't quite feel comfortable driving on the highway like this.

Does anybody know what it could be?

In the past days I didn't hit any bumps, and I didn't brake hard.

Wouldn't be surprised if one of the friction linings has come detached from a brake shoe.

Will have to look into this, thanks!

Had another drive today.

I notice the knocking isn't always... Twice it knocked, but not as loud. Other times it braked perfectly fine without any noise whatsoever.

The knocking when it did happen, now isn't felt in the brake pedal.
Again it got slower the slower I went. Really odd!

I'd check the wheel bolts first. At least be sure the wheel isn't about to fall off before you carry on testing it.

You might have a stuck close brake caliper, which cause this loud sound.

Did that, they were on tight. Did tighten them a bit more.

Another update.

Yesterday for christmas eve I went to a friends house, about a 20 minute drive. Along the entire way there, and back home... It didn't knock. At all.
I did hear something sometimes when braking, but it wasn't knocking. Can't really describe it...

Of course I'm still kind of paranoid honestly, given nothing got replaced, nothing got checked out with "that's your problem", it just went away. In my experience that can come back to bite you suddenly.
