#1: Rear axle noise. Author: corkymills, Posted: Tue Jun 20, 2017 6:36 pm ---- Hi guys, I have a Y reg 206 that has developed a "creaking" sound from the rear. Also if I go over a slight bump I get a knock which sounds like something bouncing about in the boot. I looked on You Tube and it all points to rear axle problems. I watched 2 videos, one where the complete axle was removed and replaced with a reconditioned one, and the other where the just the bearings were replaced. My question is this, Although it has just passed its MOT it is 16 years old, so need to fix as cheap as possible. Reconditioned axle, axle repair kit or rear beam from a breakers? Your thoughts on this topic would be greatly appreciated.
Regards.....corky.

The creaks might be coming from the shock absorbers, try to rock the car up'n'down by its tail to see if you can repeat it.
By the time you notice the bearings have failed, the damage has already been done to the stub axles.
So this pretty much rules any repairs out.
I'll be interested to dismantle a rear axle when have a chance, but for now I think you should go by a recon axle. You could save and risk a 2nd hand axle from breakers also being near end of its life, maybe try to find a low-mileage salvage?
