Peugeot 206 GTi S16 (1999) Clutch issues.

#1: Peugeot 206 GTi S16 (1999) Clutch issues. Author: Arthfael PostPosted: Sun Jul 23, 2017 12:08 pm

Hey there guys,

Well... let's get straight to the point Smile

After owning a Peugeot 206 1.4 for 7 years, I decided to switch to a 206 GTi which seemed to run perfectly until today. The first issue with it seems to have emerged. Car was parked as usual and after pressing the clutch pedal to put a gear in, I felt a snap, went all the way down and remained there. I pulled the pedal back with my hand and it seemed to work once again although you could feel the pedal movement wasn't very smooth. After 10 minutes, there it goes once more, a snap and it went all the way down like the first time.

Side note, I moved to Romania in Bucharest due to my work so this is why I am asking here before going to a mechanic I know nothing about and starts milking me. Razz

Anyone got any ideas on what that might be? To my limited knowledge it seems like a clutch release bearing or a clutch linkage but I might just talking nonsense here.

Thanks in advance for any insight on the matter.

Possible clutch cable snapped?

Well that was my first thought, however when I pulled the pedal back it kept working until it did it again. Shouldn't the pedal stay down if the cable snapped?

its a hydraulic clutch on all the gti i believe. check each end of the system, ie have a look for anything damaged on the pedal side and also the gearbox side (its on the front of the gearbox towards bottom of engine). the slave cylinder is plastic and may be broken or the plunger coming off the clutch lever

Well, turns out this one had a self adjust clutch cable. After searching around in google the symptoms it seems that it's a common issue when the clutch cable is pretty much done. So I removed the old cable, replaced it with a new one and now it works like a charm. The previous one was actually in a very bad shape.

Was a bit of a pain in the ass to change it. I had to remove the filter box, the battery and everything that holds the battery but to route the new cable inside the car was the most annoying part.
