N/s driveshaft removal for clutch !

#1: N/s driveshaft removal for clutch ! Author: Docbooze PostPosted: Sat Dec 02, 2017 5:25 pm
    ----
Evening

Doing my clutch on a 206 1.4 and totally stuck at removing lower ball joint. I've done a few wishbones in cars before and a couple of clutch's but never known a swine like these one's to pop out. I've so far spent 2 days just trying to free the lower arm from the hub and managed to bend a 6ft pry bar. Is there a special technique ( I need to clear about a cm on the ball joint spline to free it but just won't drop any further and that's with hub jacked up to compress springs )

Read that dropping the subframe a bit helps but this seems a bit drastic to me.

Many thanks for any help

Have you taken the bolt out from the lower balljoint?

Using a block of wood to pry against put a chain over the wishbone and bar and lever down. Should pop out easily enough. Make sure you've drained the gearbox as well, that oil stinks!

Yeah removed pinch bolt and drained oil ,( aye it does rinky dink a bit). I think it's the old problem of it being stuck in the hub on the lip on the spline. Gonna jack up on the arb droplink tomorrow and try to rattle the hub while standing on the breaker bar.

Cheers

The way i do it these days is with a spring compressor, use that to take all the load out from the top. Jacking the hub is doing similar but i'm not a fan of that, not the safest if the hub shifts (which it will probably do when the ball comes out, or you putting so much force through breaker bar and knock it). Even with the ARB still on i found that compressing the springs is enough to get the clearance

Cheers , finally got both sides off. Hell of a lot of time spent on this but reckon the key is compressing the springs by jacking or using the proper tool.
Thought I'd be finished today but never simple, now o/s driveshaft stuck in carrier. Removed 2 pins and belted the hell out of it but hasn't budged.

Beginning to think £300 from local garage wasn't such a bad price after all !

Just unbolt the engine mount along with the O/S driveshaft.

Make sure the engine is well supported before removing the lower engine mount!

Cheers , yeah that seems like the easiest / quickest way to get the driveshaft out of the gearbox. Just out of interest , do you need to remove the gearbox mount bracket for anything ( just the torx screws on the bracket are mashed, centre bolt is fine though ).
