#1: 1.4 hdi cutting out Author: Dannyb010 PostPosted: Sat Apr 07, 2018 4:01 pm

Hi, I’ve got a 1.4 hdi and started having trouble with it, when I come to start the car it starts for about 10 seconds then cuts out, then takes 4/5 cranks to start it again, I’ve plugged it in and it said air flow sensor which I’ve replaced and it’s still playing up, anybody got any ideas??

Does it cut out when your your driving it? I had a 1.4 hdi was years ago. Similar situations to yours but also when driving (not great when pulling out at roundabouts!) Nothing pinged up when plugged in, anyway I ended up getting rid and the bloke who bought it sorted it by replacing cam shaft sensor (sure that’s what he said anyway). Still going to this day with no further problems. Suppose it’s easier when you know what your looking for rather than going for blind luck!!

Also a known problem with the 1.4 hdi is the fuel lines which rub against the airbox. This wears the lines down and lets air in. Will definetly cause problems with starting.

Hi thanks for the replies, it doesn’t cut out while driving although I lost all power today for about 2 seconds on my way Manchester on the m6! wasn’t nice! I’ve replaced the fuel filter and this has solved the starting issue but I will look into fuel lines and cam sensor

Im still sticking with the fuel lines. Describes the symptoms youve got. Once started its usually fine.

What happens when you use the handprimer in the engine bay first?

From a citreon site, but same engine.

The solution!!

On the HDi There are several fuel lines running under the plastic box that is on top of the engine. (Star type bolts) it is probably some air box thingy. anyway removed that.
Under it and behind the engine are these fuel lines, the fuel filter is on the right and primer bulb on the left of the engine (as you look at it with your head under the bonnet!) the lines run this way and that.. (Citroen call it the loom?) It seems that the corner of the plastic box thing rubs on one of the fuel lines causing a microscopic hole in the line that goes to the top of the fuel filter. In my case we could just see tiny bubbles as a little fuel escaped and a bit of 'diesely' dampness. its enough to slowly let air in the top of the line amd thus fuel runs back to the tank (Downhill!)

So we needed that bit of pipe. (It is at this point that Citroen heat up the spoon to remove your eyes!) They only sell the complete Loom at Sixty something quid Plus Vat. You only need a bit of rubber hose! The catch 22 is they are also as rare as rocking horse poo! So with the smell of burning coming from my seared eye sockets I coughed the cash. relieved to know its not the pump motor thingy.

I am sure that with more time i could have cut the damaged pipe, inserted a piece of metal tube and re connected the cut ends for about £2.50.

Now the looms on order...

Hmmm.... it’s starting make sense now as my car is poo on fuel! So you say it’s the pipe that runs from the hand primer to the diesel filter??

It could also be the return line.
