#1: This afternoon's little project :) Author: ekjdm14, Location: CheshirePosted: Fri Jan 24, 2020 8:32 pm ---- Just a couple of pics of what I got up to this afternoon. The pink is in Emma's 1.4HDi & the blue in the 180. Got to swap the dial faces in the HDi as we have some genuine silver ones that are on the other cluster.
Really should post a couple of the actual cars sometime soon lol, I'm not great at getting pics!

They're not too godawful bad to change if you have a temperature controlled soldering station (as opposed to your general 20-40w iron, that will happily cook the LED as you mount it). I went around 365c and a 0.9mm chisel tip, went really smoothly although the second (blue) one took a couple of goes to get all the lamps to make good contact. That was my mistake though, that time round I tried to save time and re-use the original solder left behind from the old LED's & it doesn't take well. Would 100% recommend cleaning the pads thoroughly after removal of the old ones & using a good 60/40 tin/lead solder to attach the new.
The LED's themselves are "3528 SMD" type (simply 3.5x2.8mm Surface mount) and to do all the backlighting & needle illumination I think there were 14 on the HDi and 16 on the 180 to account for the oil temp gauge. Would advise getting at least 20 as some can die the moment you solder them so spares are handy, and you can mostly test them in-circuit using the diode test function of a multimeter to light them up slightly so make sure they all still work after fitting.
Still need to open up a spare climate panel and see what I need for that, as well as the heater panels on the other 2. Oh, and the multifunction display takes bulbs so I'm currently undecided as to how I'll change the colour on those. Hoping I can just remove the coloured filter and convert it to LED also.
