#1: 206 GTi track car project Author: andy83, Location: stoke on trentPosted: Sun Oct 03, 2021 2:09 pm ---- Hi guys after what has been around 6-7 years i have finally got myself back into 206 ownership.
our last gti was sold on as we were expecting our first child so something a tad more practical was required.
anyway iv had an itch to get into trackdays for a while so started the search or something suitable and not bank breaking to purchase, straight away i just thought id love track a 206 and within 48 hours i had fount a motor under an hour away and at a good price.
so today i headed out did all the relevant checks and struck a deal or £1100 i will be collecting the car next weekend and then the fun can begin.
got alot of plans in the pipeline which will see it into a very capable and fun track car, it will certainly be staying n/a and be an absolute screamer
first jobs are to get it stripped out and fit a set of coilovers

#4: Re: 206 GTi track car project Author: gazza82, Location: South BucksPosted: Sun Oct 03, 2021 2:51 pm ---- You can't on the forum (at least I don't think you can!) .. but you can auto-host on imgur and include the link using the icon image with the * in the menyu bar. Or copy and paste the link to the post (which I think you did on post #2)
#5: Re: 206 GTi track car project Author: Sim, Location: West CountryPosted: Wed Oct 06, 2021 10:48 pm ---- Just click next to the image button -- the one with the cloud and the 90s-style "new" star in its corner -- it will do the uploading and linking for you with just one click.

thanks so much for that, i did originally try it but it kept saying file larger than 10mb, ven jus when i tried it chucked that in a couple times be we got there
#8: Re: 206 GTi track car project Author: andy83, Location: stoke on trentPosted: Fri Oct 08, 2021 4:26 am ---- Already i have the first few mods arriving, the plan is to get the car stripped/handling/stopping better and give it an extra bit of grunt before getting it out on track asap.
i will then be adding bits as we go to improve things before the big engine build etc
OMP front strut brace arrived earlier this week
BMC cda induction kit should be here within next couple of days
Vmaxx coilovers will be here within next couple of weeks (no stock)
I did a little bit of research on the vmaxx set up and they have got alot of very positive feedback, but rest assured i will be swapping over to a much better known brand down the line and just want to get these on so i can hopefully get a couple of track days in before the year ends.
the next mods will be uprated discs and pads and a short shifter then ill move onto the whole exhaust system
#9: Re: 206 GTi track car project Author: andy83, Location: stoke on trentPosted: Sat Oct 09, 2021 4:25 pm ---- Went to collect the car today and took my main co driver with me, needless to say he approves.
Had great fun coming back and can't wait to get stuck into the task ahead.
When we got home I instantly ordered the following
Going to give the car a little freshen up and also do a coolant change whilst were at it.
#10: Re: 206 GTi track car project Author: Edward, Location: In the garagePosted: Sat Oct 09, 2021 6:52 pm ---- What's the need for an uprated clutch? Standard clutch can handle any N/A tuning you throw at the engine.

hi fella no reason in particular but i did get a very good deal on the uprated one so thought why not.
#12: Re: 206 GTi track car project Author: andy83, Location: stoke on trentPosted: Fri Oct 15, 2021 9:45 pm ---- I managed to get a job squared away early yesterday so come home and had a quick couple hours on the car.
Rear seats etc removed
Spare wheel/Jack removed
BMC cda fitted
New wipers fitted
Cabin filter replaced
All fluid levels checked and sorted
A total of 33.4kg removed from the car, air con to be deleted next which is around 10-11kg and then I'll be looking at polycarb rear 1/4s and rear screen which should be half the weight of the glass.
Anyway here's a few pics.
#13: Re: 206 GTi track car project Author: andy83, Location: stoke on trentPosted: Fri Oct 15, 2021 9:46 pm ---- I have also had a fair few amount of new parts arrived that will be going onto the car soon.
These are the following
Stainless 4-1 exhaust manifold
Lightweight crank pulley
Short shifter kit and uprated fork bush
Steel gear linkage set
Baker engine mount kit
All nice little mods I think you'll agree and will certainly give the car a more positive feel.
Lightweight flywheel will be the next purchase and then it can be fitted the same time as the new clutch
#14: Re: 206 GTi track car project Author: andy83, Location: stoke on trentPosted: Fri Oct 15, 2021 9:49 pm ---- And a couple that my son insisted that I took when we had a little drive upto truckfest in knutsford last weekend.
#15: Re: 206 GTi track car project Author: andy83, Location: stoke on trentPosted: Sun Oct 17, 2021 8:18 am ---- I last night secured a deal on these
we estimate losing another 21-23kg by removing the oe seats and putting these in place
just have the small matter of driving 3hr 20 mins to colchester next weekend to collect them
#16: Re: 206 GTi track car project Author: andy83, Location: stoke on trentPosted: Sun Oct 17, 2021 1:20 pm ---- On Thursday we will be fitting the following
looking forward to getting these bits on as it will certainly add to the driving experience, need to sort out an exhaust system to finish off that side of things especially as the rear box is now blowing.
Hopefully will be able to fit the full uprated engine mount set and front strut brace before the end of the month.
#17: Re: 206 GTi track car project Author: andy83, Location: stoke on trentPosted: Tue Oct 19, 2021 1:43 pm ---- Vmaxx coilovers arrived today, these coupled with OMP front strut brace and Whiteline rear ARB will really being the car together handling wise
#18: Re: 206 GTi track car project Author: andy83, Location: stoke on trentPosted: Wed Oct 20, 2021 4:18 pm ---- tomorrow the car will be having the following going onto it (all being well)
4-1 manifold (possibly decat at same time depends whats easiest haha)
oil and filter change
new fuel filter
quickshift and steel gear linkages
i have also got the car booked in on 29th october for a custom cat back system at MIJ performance in walsall
#19: Re: 206 GTi track car project Author: JamieM, Posted: Mon Nov 08, 2021 5:43 pm ---- Nice one,
Those coilovers I have on my 180. VERY harsh ride - on my MOT they stated (jobs worths)
Monitor and repair if necessary (advisories):
Front suspension has little movement due to upgraded components.
I reckon best suited to the track.
#20: Re: 206 GTi track car project Author: andy83, Location: stoke on trentPosted: Mon Nov 08, 2021 7:08 pm ---- glad to see the forum back up and running i have a few things to update on so ill copy/paste over best i can
21/10/2021
On Thursday the following were fitted
4-1 manifold
short shift and steel gear linkages with uprated fork bush.
alloy crank pulley
Oil and filter change
I can say without any hesitation the car feels so much better now on the gear change and also the manifold has really opened it up from 3.5k onwards it certainly pulls harder.
I have the car booked in for a set of Avon zv7 tyres also and really can't wait get the stainless system on there next Friday afternoon.
I've also bought a spare cylinder head that I'll be sending to Al developments and then complimenting that with a pair of Newman ph2 cams and a custom remap of the oe ecu at GT Motorsport.
31/10/2021
went to collect the spare cylinder head from my local parcelforce yesterday this will be sent to AL developments for porting etc
in midweek i received the new water pump and cam belt kit that will be fitted at same time as the new head.
Had to postpone getting an exhaust made on friday as we have had some bloody horrible bug in our house for over a week now which has seen me having take a total of 4 days off due to looking after my son and myself also being bad, so for the time being i got this ordered.
A little temporary fix for the car to replace the blown standard part. I'll be going full custom once the engine develops in the new year
01/11/2021
One thing I have been looking into is how to upgrade the front brakes without having pay 1k+
(i know you guys will already know all of this)
standard front discs are only 266mm in size so the obvious first option would of been to go for a set of GTi 180 calipers/discs which would up the size to 283mm.
After a bit more of a search I fount out that a model of the 307cc had 302mm brakes and they are also interchangeable with my car.
So a quick trip to eBay and I fount the calipers required for £40 and got straight onto euros for a set of brembo discs and ebc green stuff pads (will run yellowstuff for track use)

sounds like he was a proper one
should be bang on for what we want until we change over down the line
#22: Re: 206 GTi track car project Author: andy83, Location: stoke on trentPosted: Sat Nov 20, 2021 6:21 am ---- Hi guys been hugely busy with work so things have slowed down a bit.
But I have managed do a few more little bits on the car
Gave the throttle body a much needed clean
Fitted a new set of Ngk spark plugs all gapped correctly.
And also got the sportex back box on there what I'm really happy with looks wise and also I can't fault the sound it's just enough (as said this is only a temp set up until I go full custom when we get the engine build underway).
#23: Re: 206 GTi track car project Author: andy83, Location: stoke on trentPosted: Sun Nov 21, 2021 1:11 pm ----
Purchased this last night
Been doing a lot of research on a piggyback ECU and these things seem to be right at the top, they can even run throttle bodies etc when ran in fuel implant mode.
This will be going on as soon as I get the ported head and newman cams in there.
#24: Re: 206 GTi track car project Author: andy83, Location: stoke on trentPosted: Wed Dec 22, 2021 6:01 am ---- been massively busy with work tying up the last jobs before a little xmas break.
update on the car is as follows
the water pump decided to let go, but i think it only did about a max of 3 miles in said state.
Going to test the head to make sure the gasket is in good shape and if so will be doing cambelt/waterpump etc during xmas and new year.
Did a bit of swatting up on best way and it seems that taking the engine off its mounts and lifting/tilting forward makes he job a hell of a lot easier, this will also be the ideal time to fit the uprated engine mounts
if it turns out the head gasket is shot then I have a spare cylinder head here that will be sent to AL Developments in the new year for porting etc and well look a uprating the cams at the same time
#25: Re: 206 GTi track car project Author: andy83, Location: stoke on trentPosted: Sun Dec 26, 2021 12:42 pm ---- Great news the hg is fine, I did think it should be but you never know.
#26: Re: 206 GTi track car project Author: andy83, Location: stoke on trentPosted: Thu Feb 10, 2022 9:27 am ---- After being let down on numerous occasions to use a friends ramps at his garage I decided to get the car over to my good mate rsmat at ocd productions to get some of the work underway and most importantly get the new water pump and cam belt kit on there.
I'll hopefully be able to join him on the spanners and rattle a few jobs off also.
#27: Re: 206 GTi track car project Author: andy83, Location: stoke on trentPosted: Wed Feb 23, 2022 5:04 pm ---- Had a stay over at my good mates Matt of OCD Productions in north Wales last weekend, got his living room painted for him and watched the boxing on Saturday night, it was great to see Kell Brook put that grudge to bed in dominating fashion.
Had to get a few pics of the GTi whilst there, watch this space over the coming weeks for some progress updates
#28: Re: 206 GTi track car project Author: andy83, Location: stoke on trentPosted: Tue Mar 08, 2022 9:22 am ---- pleased to report that the new water pump and cam belt kit have been fitted alongside the baker bm engine mount kit and powerflex lower rear engine mount.
nice positive steps being taken and the mounts will certainly help things.
next on the list is to fit the new 307cc brake set up, this will increase disk size from 266mm to 302mm and fit just nice under the 16" wheels, i also have new rear brakes to go on at the same time along with a set of goodridge brake hoses
i have also been buying a few more parts for the car one of which is the new omp wrc steering wheel
alongside this iv ordered a set of carbon fibre door cards which should be with me within the next week or 2 so ill get pics of these on arrival
#29: Re: 206 GTi track car project Author: andy83, Location: stoke on trentPosted: Sat Mar 26, 2022 8:51 am ---- ew little updates for anyone interested
carbon fibre door cards should arrive either tomorrow or monday
the car now has a fresh 12 months MOT and it passed without a single advisory, which for a 2005 car what i paid a grand for cant be bad.
new rear brakes and braided brake lines have been fitted
next on the list is get the front brakes and braided lines on, sportex centre section and then coilovers.
one thing that has become noticable is the cars now running rather rich since fitting the exhaust manifold, so once its back here ill get my mate at gt motorsport to map it as is for me this will do for the time being and keep things safe.
really cant wait get back out in this thing, will certainly have a more drivers focused feel to it.
#30: Re: 206 GTi track car project Author: andy83, Location: stoke on trentPosted: Sun May 15, 2022 3:22 pm ---- got quite a few updates that have happened over the last month
firstly the new front brake set up was fitted
comparison of old disk size compared to new
i ordered a new set of numberplates with a little nod towards mr ocd (rsmat)
vmaxx coilovers have been fitted and already has really made the car feel more planted, just working out how much to drop the ride height now, possibly between 35-50mm
my newman ph2 cams finally arrived after just over a month, these are about as extreme as i can go on standard injection once we go over to throttle bodies these will be swapped out for ph4 cams.
OMP front strut brace fitted
OMP steering wheel fitted
#31: Re: 206 GTi track car project Author: JamieM, Posted: Wed Jun 08, 2022 11:18 am ---- Good progress made mate!
Keep the updates coming. Did you get the seats in the end?
#32: Re: 206 GTi track car project Author: andy83, Location: stoke on trentPosted: Sun Jun 12, 2022 4:59 pm ---- thanks alot mate
no i didnt, the deal fell through i was gutted at the time but hey ho worse things going isnt there.
iv got my heart set on a pair of sparco grid q seats, they could possibly be the next mod
#33: Re: 206 GTi track car project Author: Squeakers, Location: EssexPosted: Fri Jun 17, 2022 10:39 pm ---- This project looks great and bet it's lots of fun. Quite a lot of work done in a fairly short amount of free time. Wishing mine was more like your one as I'm reading about it haha. Looking forward to see future updates.

thanks alot mate just try to do what we can as and when. hopefully have some more in the next month or so
#35: Re: 206 GTi track car project Author: andy83, Location: stoke on trentPosted: Sat Jun 25, 2022 4:55 pm ---- little update from 28th may
I decided to come home from my mates over in north wales in my 206, it was my first chance to drive it since having the mods above carried out and it put some much needed miles onto it. I left my fiesta RS Turbo over there with him and collected the following weekend.
i can report back that the new brakes are a huge improvement over standard and that's just with normal road pads in there.
Also the vmaxx coilovers i can't speak highly enough of, ride quality is still spot on and it feels so much more tight now and this is still at standard ride height. Uprated engine mounts are certainly doing what they are meant to as there is now no knocking from anywhere in the bay and the steering wheel has made a positive feel on the driving experience.
all in all a massive step forward been made and happy with the car.
i decided to give the car a quick wash when i got home and put here away in the garage, im going to replace the lcd display later today also (this was done)
#36: Re: 206 GTi track car project Author: Squeakers, Location: EssexPosted: Tue Jun 28, 2022 10:04 pm ---- Nice to hear, especially about the brake upgrade. Seen alot of posts and tutorials on how to do it. Can increase the disc diameter by quite alot. The standard small breaks on my 206 don't feel as good even with new discs and pads as the polo I was borrowing beforehand. I think definitely a route to go down.
