206 1.6 sport petrol ... Noisy gear change

#1: 206 1.6 sport petrol ... Noisy gear change Author: Hanna-hdi PostPosted: Wed Mar 30, 2022 6:29 pm

Hi

I have a 2005 1.6 petrol (107bhp) and she has a noisy gear change. This is more so when cold and not as noticeable when warmed up. I have changed the gear oil which didn't make a difference. I think after using it a bit more it's like a hear linkage noise. Are they common to be clunky?

I am happy to change them but also wondered if they did a short shifter so I can do that at the same time. Hopefully make it all a bit quieter on the change.

Any help is welcomed

My 2005 1.6cc makes a lovely 'clack' when changing gear - the bushes on the end of the shift rods are totally ruined on it, when changing the clutch they literally fell out... I popped em back in and drove 2k miles since...just ignored it !
Short shifters do exist for the MA gearbox it but I've no idea where - pug1off is likely a good starting point though.

Certainly first thing i'd do is pop the airbox ect out and see if you can see how bad the linkages are. Alas everyone I know who owns, or has owned a Peugeot has had clunky gears !

Hi thank you, I have ordered the new rods and will fit them today although there seems to be little to no play at the box end. Worth a try.
The short shifters annoying as there are loads for 98 to 2000 models but not the 2005. How different can they be lol

Fitted them, not a bad job but bashed my hand

Decided to change the clutch to see if it sorts this clunky noise

I hope it's slipping as well if you are doing the clutch - I did that on the street. Not much fun getting the box out!
Might be worth trying to catch the noise on video - stick on youtube and upload!
The clutch itself shouldn't cause a clunky gearchange - if it's that it should clunk any time the clutch is used.

I'm not aware of any differences between gearboxes and shifters for the 98-2000 vs newer models. I can't say for sure there though, but I'd recommend contacting the seller or a Peugeot specialist to ask.

Finished clutch change and on a small test drive seems to have solved it. Although my starter motor is awful now so think I may not have it on quite right

Pressure plate was on its way out then I'd guess? Glad it's sorted!
Starter motor is a pain - took 5 attempts for me to get it seated right. As long as it's not hitting off the flywheel when car is started it's not too bad though...!
Good luck getting it sitting right - hopefully you won't need it!
