1.4 16v 2004 - idle bouncing when clutch disengaged

I've recently had the clutch changed (did the clutch cable myself which was a pita) and it drives fine, but when cold the car has a bit of a wobble when trying to pull away, revs dropping and need to manage it with the gas pedal.

I took the car for a drive today and noticed when I got back that the idle was bouncing in neutral with the clutch disengaged. It's fine when I press the clutch... any ideas what would cause this? I don't get any codes come up with a scanner...

Update... Problem seems intermittent, if I turn the engine off and on again it idles ok - I'm guessing it could just be the ECU re-learning idle after an extended period being disconnected?

Make sure youve not got any air leaks, that could cause a pulsing idle.

Whats the year and engine?

I had a similar sounding problem with a 2.0L EW10J4. At low load (putting in clutch) the RPM sometimes dropped really low, and occasionally stall. Not really intermittent but cyclic. (Kind of like re-learning you mentioned.

I also use an ethanol conversion key and through this was able to determine that the injectors were off when the RPM would drop. This would be ok while in gear, but not ideal with the clutch in.

Your motor has a different ECU so but it could still be worth checking the speed sensor on the gearbox.

In my case the problem was a broken speed sensor. No errors visible with a normal OBD reader.. I found this using PP2000. Looking at OBD data... the speed was 0 always (before fixing) and now it is correct... You could try checking the speed according to OBD while driving.

I guess that the speed and mileage was calculated using the ABS wheel sensors... The ECU uses the speed sensor to adjust for low loads.
