206 Heavy Coolant Leak
-> 206 Problems

#1: 206 Heavy Coolant Leak Author: TigerHunters PostPosted: Tue May 13, 2025 11:25 pm

Hey guys, new to the Peugeot 206 train. Got a nice little 1.4 petrol automatic a week ago. Finally managed to get some good time in it today (noticed a little coolant here and there but not anything that looked like an active leak)

Fast forward a hour later of driving and back onto my drive as soon as I shut the engine off its almost like it opened up the flood gates and it started rushing out.

It seemed to be puddling directly below the coolant tank/reservoir. What ever happened completely emptied the tank. Once it cooled down a few hours later I attempted to top up the tank to try to see if it flushed right back out or if I could spot the leak.

To my surprise nothing seemed to be leaking. The tanks levels was not going down and after starting her up again and testing (but only for a few rev's as it was getting late) still nothing appeared to be leaking out.

I'm hoping this is nothing too serious because I have gained a little soft spot for it.

I will try to get some pics shortly but additional info - there appeared to be running down the side of the coolant tank but I'm not sure if that was to the level in which the flood gates opened up beneath.

Any help or additional info needed to help - Would be happy to provide and appreciate!

My bet is that expansion tank cap wasn't screwed on tight.

When you switch a petrol engine off after a journey, water pump stops, there's no airflow through radiator either, so the hot engine block keeps increasing the coolant temp and thus the pressure beyond normal driving conditions.
You can see that by turning ignition around a minute after it's been switched off, for the temp gauge to go up, sometimes even triggering a fan:)

Added with a non-airtight cooling system (e.g. loose cap), water starts to expand-boil, leaking out a good amount.

Hey, sorry for necroing this post. But thought I would update it to explain what the issue was for anyone else.

It turns out that it was the thermostat housing, the seals I believe were damaged and once a new thermostat was fitted the leaked stopped and the temperature issue was no longer a problem
