Project vRS

Bought this a week ago to replace the 206 after issues with a whining diff!

Seemed to have some rubbish chrome door handle covers on which are now off and also the stupid chavtastic scoop things from infront of the rear wheels have been kicked off!!Also removed the vindis sticker from boot!

So took a couple of pics today after the LCR splitter was put on and also put my alpine headunit in with the kce 350bt unit. The bluetooth unit is ace as i can wirelessly play music from my iphone! Sweet!
Its sitting 25mm lower front and back on eibach springs aswell(it was from the previous owner im told!)

And yes it is dirty! lol

Future plans are to get a fmic and a remap asap! Very Happy

Also it came with a PD160 air intake from a cupra and is now fitted with a k and n panel filter.

fronts do i think but rears are too wide so would need to have the covers swapped but would end up looking baggy.

Wouldn't it be cheaper to get your current seats re-trimmed and you could get them in the colour you want.

Or are the others more sporty?

yeah it probably would be but it turns out the seats were bought by a nigerian wanting to pay by cheque! (seriously) so im hoping they might be a better price than Ā£1K!!!!!
The oem ones also have a rather sexy vRS badge embroidered into them!

edit.... just like these from another vRS Nom Nom Droolage!

Another little update!
Ive decided to get cruise control!Got it at a good price and comes with the wiring loom all ready to retro fit. Im going to fit it myself but it needs switching on using vagcom, which will all be done over the weekend hopefully.

And also got hold of a diesel tuning box at a VERY good price Cool
Currently the vRS is 130hp and 310 Nm of torque to 163bhp and 388 Nm of torque.Although these figures are estimated ive no miss givings that it will make a difference and the pd lumps seem to respond well to tuning and mapping etc!

Also have a few other bits too, got some black plasti dip to spray the front chrome grill to black as i think it will look better. Some vRS wheel badges but wont be going on till around july time when the wheels are refurbed.
Also have coming, a vagcom cable and vagcom software to "talk" to the car and change a few settings in the ecu and some green vRS valve caps! Pics up when i get chance!

Well! A quick update really.Im annoyed in one sense that the tuning box has been fitted and removed after a day as with it in, the bloody clutch slips on boost. However, after a chat with a good mate who works for a VW tuning company he reckons my vRS is remapped already as the box shouldnt give the standard clutch any problems. The clutch and DMF were replaced 3000 miles ago according to the service book.
So im selling it on and getting the car rolling roaded asap to see what its putting out!
Next update will include retro fitting the cruise when i get hold of vagcom!

#58: Re: Project vRS Update pg4 Author: mattievrs, Location: Leicester PostPosted: Mon May 31, 2010 10:59 am
    ----
Been a while so its update time!
Fitted the cruise control and enabled it in vagcom so its all working now with great results!!(68mpg!)

Repainted the calipers as they were flaking and looked a bit grubby and added some vrs decals(which you cant really see!) Pics of decals up later!

Also decided the chrome grill surround looked a bit "grandad" so sprayed it black with plastidip.

Next up is retrofitting reverse sensors that are on their way as you read.Update soon!

genuine VAG. Got them off ebay but just the loom and sensors as in the vrs models they put the control box in but not the looms and sensors! Confused
So its just plug and play which is great!

A long overdue update then.........................

Put some LED's into the sidelights,my old nightbreakers into the headlight beams and some LED's into the interior lights(pics when its dark!)

Bought some oil and an oil filter to do an oil change tomorrow hopefully!

Installed a centre console armrest from a mk4 golf
Looks a bit darker black but its a spot on match in real life.

And noticed the silver paint was flaking from the foglight surrounds so decided to spray them black to give it a bit more of a vented/audi look!

Another small update x2!

Got hold of a mk5 golf auto dimming rear view mirror so thatll be put in tomorrow morning (fitted pics then!)

And at the moment the boot opens via the remote fob but only pops open about an inch off the latch so ive got some springs that'll fit the gas struts when the boot is closed and have enough sprung weight in them to push the boot open enough to allow the struts take over and full open it automatically Cool
Again pics and video when done tomorrow!

That's pretty cool, but surely having the boot open like that it could easily hit something? Like you lose control of taking it up carefully or whatever if your up against a wall/another car etc.

That's the only thing anyway, I really like the car, have been tempted to at least try diesel power at some point Smile

i did think about this but i rarely reverse into a space and id be concious about where and when id open the boot anyway.I also usually only open the boot when im by it anyway so i reckon itll be ok.Thanks for pointing it out though.

hopefully not but we will see.The boot is fairly weighty so i cant see them making a massive difference to be honest though.

And the springs are only mediums so they wont give massive resistance.

Before

After

Also did the fogs too

The rear lights also got fly eyed!
Before

After, just did the clear part of the lens

Also installed the LED drl's.They are much brighter in real life but my phone wouldnt pick up the brightness!

Thanks for looking, and ill post some dusk and night shots of the drl's later on.

Like it all mate, especially the rear lights with the FlyEye kit, save for the DRL's. Sorry, but they really aren't my thing - I feel it cheapens the car, especially as the LED's look uneven in your last couple of photos - in position and brightness.

Not going to dewiper as the fabia has a habit of sucking mucky water onto the back of the car!

The headlight washers came as a standard part if the orig owner payed for xenon headlights to be fitted as its a legal requirement.

I have the covers already and im in the process of spraying them and have the units and washer bottle/pumps etc from an audi s3 which is the same.

yeah really easy mate. Just run the wires from the courtesy light in the front and hey presto. They give a little more light in the back as the tints tend to make it a bit dark.

Im also currently making some exterior handles that will have an LED in that lights up when the remote locking is opened.

Done a few bits today but only a few pics taken.

Changed both rear discs and pads as the others were completely shot and have had a few problems with the handbrake dragging. It seems the springs on the actual handbrake cable have become fatigued over time. After a bit of research i came up with the answer.Got hold of some return springs from the Audi S3 to help the handbrake return to its off position correctly.

Also put some LED bulbs in the reversing lights to give a bit more light output and also cause i have a hard on for LED's at the moment for some reason!

Yeah i kind of changed them due to having tinted rear windows and when im reversing somewhere without lights its hard to see and these throw a hell of a lot more light out.

These are the ones i bought and although theyre for a pug they fit fine

Right, update time! Fitted some gloss black handles to the car today and the front ones now have small LED's in them that light up when unlocked.
So, handle with led fitted in the rear
Basically i drilled a hole and fed the wires through the handle and filled the hollow part with silicon to waterproof it more.

The exiting of the wire

Joined the LED wires to some more wire after feeding it through the door

Then wired them into the lower door open/puddle light connector

Handle mounted on the door

Finally a video to show what the idea and outcome is all about

So, another update!!!

Had enough of feeling the metal inside the seat when getting in to it. So decided to sort it out!
The offending item after removal, seems its just worn through (sorry,no pics of the removal!)

The new foam base on the seat frame with the seat cover over it

The seat cover fits back on using the old hog rings which pull the cover tight and shape it to the foam

End result! Well happy!

And another update!!!!!

Got a bit bored with the black golf armrest so thought id pimp it!
So, one black armrest

Pulled the top off(without breaking any clips!!!)

One old seat cover from a lad on Briskoda

Cut it into a shape resembling the armrest

Add some iron on sticky wonder web

Get them both on the ironing board

Then get the iron nice and hot and iron it to the top of the armrest

Then use a hot glue gun to tidy up the inside

The final result

And now back in the car! Looks f*****g ace!

It helps when im leaving work at midnight and my cars parked on the underground parking level. And no, the lights are turned off at 11pm.

So, yes, it does actually make a solution to a problem.

Good job you did on the strut brace, notice any difference?
I've got a Whiteline rear ARB on mine but I'm unsure on what setting it's on.
Got some springs for the rear calipers too (possible sticky rear caliper), so when I whack them on I'll see if I can adjust the rear ARB anymore.

Which way is stiffer?

Towards the rear is stiffer mate! Oo er!

I didn't really notice any difference with the front strut brace till I put the rarb on. the front seems to turn in alot better now but could be down to the rarb I guess.

No i didnt sorry! It was Ā£220 all in for the unit, the GPS/TV aerial and the sorround. Ive paid Ā£14 for a reverse camera aswell but im still waiting for that. For the money im really impressed with it and im going to be binning the iGo sat nav and flashing it with tomtom in the week.

That's an amazing price, I don't know how much these go for but average - decent headunits go for at least half that, and sat navs are pretty pricey too, and the fact it's got a nice and big dvd screen...

Small update, ive used Vagcom (vcds) to change the comfort indicators from 3 flashes to 4 (You touch the indicator stalk lightly and it flashes when changing lanes) as 3 wasnt quite enough! And also disabled the anti hijack locking at 10mph, also made it so one click of the key opens all the doors rather than the drivers on its own.
Also changed the timer on the heated mirrors and rear window demister to 15 mins rather than infinite so i dont burn out the elements!

#218: Re: Project vRS Update pg15 Author: skard, Location: UK - North PostPosted: Wed Mar 23, 2011 7:00 am
    ----
what modules is it to code the heating element and the comfort indicator? might have a look at that since i haven't used my cable for a year!

also, what camera did you get? i replaced mine (round one that i had to drill into valance) with a number plate camera, much more discreet and nicer looking. - also has a very good angle of view. only problem being i have a bright white LED on one side and a yellow festoon bulb on the other, as the 'error-free' ones on ebay don't work as such. need to solder on a resistor when i get time.
the camera was Ā£20 from hong kong, the manufacturer of my HU want Ā£95 for the exact same one but with their branding.

#219: Re: Project vRS Update pg15 Author: mattievrs, Location: Leicester PostPosted: Wed Mar 23, 2011 7:14 am
    ----
Theyre both in 46 central convenience then comfort modules. Then goto the adaption menu and use the drop down menu at the top. You use coding numbers into the values ie 247 mins is infinite for the heating elements and you change it to what you want (15 for 15mins etc etc). The flasher units is in 46 aswell and its simple as changing the adaption code to 1,2,3,4 or 5 depending on what you want.
The rear view camera hasnt come yet but was similar to this one
cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBay...K:MEWNX:IT

Im lucky in the sense that the plate lights sit up in the boot a bit so you wont see the camera unit that much and im going to spray it silver so it blends into the gap above the plate.

cool thanks.
i have to plug it in anyway to adjust the sensitivity of the auto lights.

that camera is similar to the one i got. i had to improvise to get it to stay in place though (once i took the old light holder out it was just a void with nothing to screw it into), not sure if yours will be the same?

Small syling update. Ive had some centre pillar vinyls in matte black for about 6 months but never got round to fitting them till today. Im really pleased with how they blend the tints and glass into one. The rears are privacy glass and the fronts are factory tint.
Perhaps some gloss black ones would look even better but they dont make them!

Update time, but not a massive update!

Today ive fitted some Team Heko wind deflectors and i think they look pretty good. They also "blend" in somewhat with the tints i think, which is a bonus! Glad i went for the full set as with the fronts alone, it looked a bit odd.

Update time again!

Finally got round to replacing the rear bumpstops. Due to it being lowered on springs but standard shocks its been sat on the bumpstops and destroyed them! Ive now added new, shorter bumpstops.
Destroyed bumpstops!

New bumpstops!

And fitted.

Thanks for looking.

Another update. Ive had a knocking from the front again and after investigating, i found one of the front bushes on the wishbone has completely disintegrated! So i put some powerflex bushes on!

Whilst taking the wishbone out, annoyingly, the rear console bush split so had to press another one in. Same as the other side, i fitted a Leon cupra R bush in.

Wishbone back in.

A couple of other jobs i did but didnt take photos were new drop links on either side and a couple of new seals and clips on the bottom intercooler boost hose.

All in all, a productive day and the knocking has gone!

Thanks for looking.

Is the wishbone a hard job? I've got all the bushes but not had chance to attempt it yet!

The fronts are a bit of a pain to get out but the poly bushes are easy to get in. The real pain is the rear console bushes, they again arent too bad to get the old ones out if theyre the orig ones, but the pressing of the new cupra ones are fairly hard due to them being an interference fit.

Okay mate cheers, how did you press them in in the end? I'm doing drop links and ARB bushes on the weekend so I'll have a gander at my rears, I think they are originals.

Sorry only just seen this reply! I used a homemade tool that consists of 2 thick plates of round steel and a tensile steel nut and bolt.

Update time again! Bought a few goodies for the vRS today, i only have copied pics at the moment but more will get put up when the fitting etc gets done!

So, new front discs (simply functional with a bit more "look" to them and nothing more)

Boost Gauge(I might not fit this yet though!)
Glows white at the moment but im sorting it to match the green of the dash)

And a holder for it which matches the interior colour and dimpled effect of the dash

Then on the 29th June its going upto Mansfield to Shark Performance to be remapped!

Another update! Never done so much work on the car over 2 days! Laughing

New front discs fitted! And yes, the wheels and car need a good clean!

And still to do over the next couple of days, ive got a new oem intercooler as the mountings on the other are broken and also have a rear strut brace to fit.
Also found out yesterday there are a couple of holes in the air intake pipe that seem to have appeared after rubbing on a clamp. So have ordered a new pipe. So that'll be fitted asap when it arrives.

Thanks for looking.

New one fitted with the mounts intact

Whilst the arch liner was out i did a little "pikey" mod to get more cool air passing through and around the Intercooler
So out came the Dremel and..........

And fitted back in the arch

Also fitted the rear strut brace in place aswell

Cut the carpet to neaten it all up

And added a sticker! Wink

Another update!

Went upto Shark Performance in Mansfield today for the remap! After finding out my Fabia was already mapped by an unknown company, and it having a bit of an agressive map (boost and torque wise) i had a shark map uplaoded to the ecu. It now feels alot smoother on and off boost and seems to pull more progressively in my opinion. Figures before were 149bhp with 310ft/lb of torque with 1.8psi of boost and are now 168.8bhp and 295ft/lb of torque with 1.8psi of boost. Although the torque figure has dropped slightly (i chose this as the standard clutch is good for 300ft/lb of torque and no more) the power is alot more useable and pulls noticeably better through all 6 gears. So all in all, im really happy with the new map.

Thanks for looking

Should have painted the non contact surfaces of the disc in silver Hammerite. Keeps them looking brand new and stops them corroding.

The car isnt a show queen mate! I dont really mind rust on the non contact surfaces. But point taken.

Update time again. I decided i didnt like the number plate surround on the front as pictured below

So off it came! Then decided to carbon vinyl the bumper plate holder as i had some lying around.
How it looked

Back on the bumper

I also had a 5 litre washer bottle that i sourced for doing the headlight washer conversion. I sold the loom and washer jets a while back as i couldnt be bothered to do it for a small pointless gain. However the new bottle replaces the 1 litre bottle which im filling up once a fortnight, so shouldn't be filling it up as many times!

Had a productive weekend really! I've decided on moving the boost gauge and adding a volt and oil temp gauge. So I've got a new a pillar trim in now and wired the gauges into above the stereo using a single din gauge holder. They're a little brighter than the rest of the instruments but I'm waiting for some tint film for them.

The oil temp isn't wired into a sensor yet as I'm getting an oil and filter change tomorrow then putting the new sump plug and temp sensor in. I'll be using this if anyone's interested!

A little follow up from the dial refitting as i decided on the other way round in the end!
Pic of the temp sensor in the sump with a waterproof connector

Next up the loom with the other end of the waterproof connector on, with loom tape to tidy it up

Removed the wiper mech to gain access to the bonnet release cable grommet

Pic to show where its going through

Loom through into cabin and taped up

A video of it all installed and set up so they glow white in the day and green to match the dash when side/headlights are on
