Rear Axle strip pictures and rebuild

#1: Rear Axle strip pictures and rebuild Author: vwaudi, Location: midlands PostPosted: Tue Feb 09, 2010 3:44 pm

I posted this on the last site, so here we go again

I had the usual 206 rear worn axle problem, so after much deliberation I decided t buy a good second hand axle and refurbish it myself.

So the axle was 60 pounds and the bearings about 72 pounds. All finished it cost me about 130 pounds and about 6 hrs of time.

Note you will need access to hydraulic press to push torsion bars out of the arms and to assemble the bearings. But this could be done with a set of pullers and a decent vice.

The problem

The presses are around 140+ second hand on ebay Smile Even still it's quite a technical process, not that simple! I'll be paying someone to do the 309's one that's for sure.

They go in from either side

Tbh it aint a hard job, i did it with a sledge, a vice, small hammer, and chisel

It really is easy

Just taped them in with a hammer, make sure the surfaces are free from crud

Bit of P80 wheel or a wire wheel would do Smile

Where did you purchase the new axle stubs from, ive looked everywhere but with no luck whatsoever, are 306 stubs the same ?

They were from a second hand axle,

The original thought was to overhaul a good second hand axle, to remove the future risk of the seals giving up. So far the axle has been good as I now have about 70K miles on it now

I think the overhaul places take your shot axle back in exchange, because one side may still be good enough to build into another overhauled axle.
