Picked up this little beauty last year. Plans are to do a few track days as I build it up and hopefully start rallying again in a few years after a long break. Sad

Started off with a few creaks and knocks so so far has been treated to a reconditioned rear beam. Full set of Mintex discs and pads, new clutch kit, new group A lower wishbones, drop links, top mounts and bearings, new set of T1R's, new engine seals and gaskets.

Old beam:

New seals and Clutch:

The only come from Peugeot Sport normally. I suspect it is possible to make your own, all the are is GTi wishbones with a 2x metal bushes instead of 1x rubber and 1x metal.

How much? £157+VAT each? Even with the poor exchange rate they aren't that expensive from Peugeot Sport in France.

I'll get some pics up when it's back on the track wheels. Still using it as my daily commuter until i sort a new car out.

Ordered this last week. Sportex competition exhaust. Got the mid section and back box this week, the de-cat should come next week as they had to make one.

Need to centre it a bit better

That's all for now.

Seats, side mounts and harnesses arrived this week Smile

Also the de-cat got delivered,

And on the same day the steering wheel and boss arrived. I opted for the OMP WRC suede semi dished wheel Cool

So I started fitting the steering wheel as I'm getting itchy feet with all the goodies building up in the garage and the car not off the road yet to really start work on it.

Bit blurry sorry Laughing

Drove to work with it and it feels so much nicer than the standard wheel Smile

Roll on next week when hopefully a nice parcel from custom cages will be delivered.

Bit of work on the loom, re-routed with a shorter path to the rear of the car. Original spec goes across the car under both seats then winds back again around the back of the boot. This one is trimmed down as well as having less wires in it. Save save.

Seat mounts. Sits nice on the OE mount points so bars are welded to those. You can also see the loom, now wrapped in kevlar protection.

40mm x 3mm angle iron for the seat mounts.

I have no spacers on the front. I'm using Team Dynamics Pro race 1.2 wheels with a 15mm offset.

I've hacked the heater box up and got rid of the climate control unit. All the servos have gone and the flaps have been set to demist permenantly. The two wires going to the fan will now be switched via a relay. It is now just on or off which is all I need. I split the unit in two to get the heater matrix out and aircon evaporator. I'll keep the rest as it's really light now.

So in the future if i decide funds allow me to start stage rallying again it's ready set up for it. I know what you mean. It's totally not needed on a track car but I have in the past needed the handbrake to correct a bit of understeer and the gti cable hand brakes are so s**t it was a struggle. With the hydraulic one it makes it so much easier and controlable.

I didn't think you'd be using the 'notch' method given the standard of the other works!

When I say lowered 1 notch, I actually meant, the rear ride height was measured, the rear beam stripped, bearings/stub axles checked and greased then reassembled but with a new ride height 30mm lower than previous. I didn't realise that was such a crime! What is the correct way of doing it then?

Its a 350mm OMP WRC. 70mm dish

Demon Tweeks Tell them it costs too much and you can get 20% of most of their prices.

#59: Re: GTi Track Car Author: imjeeves, Location: Glasgow / Welling PostPosted: Fri Oct 22, 2010 4:12 am

Cheers mate

To do the ride height correctly you want to:
1. jack the car up at the back.
2.Remove both rear wheels
3. Measure with a tape measure from the center of the rear hub to the middle of the arch and record the measurement.
4.Remove the torsion bar for that side of the car.
5. If you want to lower 30mm then move the rear arm up that amount i.e if it was 150mm you put it up to 120mm from the arch
6. Attempt to slide the torsion bar back into place rotating it one spline at a time as it will only for on the correct rotation.
7. Do the same for the other side of the car.

The rotate one spline damages the bars if you run it like that.
Hope this helps

Ok, so I tried to start it and it wouldn't. It appears the BSI unit is f****d. Probably due to me cutting so many wires out the loom and alarm. Didn't have any of the functions that the BSI does like wipers, indicators etc.

So I ripped everything out. Every last wire on the car was cut out and I'm starting from scratch with a custom loom I'm going to make.

First off, seeing as I had it in on my shelf at home was fit the OMEX 600. I bought it from Northampton Motorsport at PPC in the Park this summer. I wasn't going to fit it until I started tuning the engine, but what the hell. So called up NM and booked it in next Wednesday to go on the rolling road.

So the past few days I've made the engine loom up. I had the semi assembled loom off OMEX so it was all laid out in the bay, labelled and cut to length. Then the original connectors were soldered onto the loom protected with Raychem DR25 heat shrink and over wrapped with military spec kevlar protection.

I got a wiring diagram for a rally car and bought all new equipment to make the loom. a nice modular fuse/relay box for inside, waterproof main relay box for under the bonnet and loads of high quality toggle switches.

And seeing as the old clocks are as good as useless now I referred to my kit car magazine from last month where they reviewed dash clocks and this unit come out very high. So ordered one of these which should be here tomorrow.

Really impressive mate but you have now got me worried as i have cut a lot of wires out of the car aswell. I was going to use the standard stuff to do the lights etc so cut everything else away Sad You dont still have the wiring diagram for the rally car do you? Would you be able to email me a copy?

I looked into the handbrake thing. The blue book doesnt state that you need one however the road traffic act requires you to have a mechanical system and so scrutineers will fail you for not complying to the RTA

No, they are really well priced. I had an ETB digi dash lite in my kit car that was £450 but this has the same features minus the GPS and was only £250.

Rally car wiring diagrams are on polevaults website here www.polevolt.co.uk/aca..._Info.html

and you can order all the parts from them. I got it all for £230, minus the wire which I've got in stock.

Got this done last night. Looks a mess, but once all the wires are present I can then loom them together and wrap them.

The stalk controls for the lights are into the fuse box so they will need connecting up to the front and rear looms.

The wiper stalk is ready to be connected but I need to order more terminals for the fuse box. Stupid me ordered 20 seeing as it's a 20 fuse holder. but each one has two

It looks a right mess, but I have all the wire i need right to hand Laughing

Looking good. You dont happen to have a note of the parts that you have ordered to build the loom? I think that even though i havent checked my system is working, if i can get rid of the standard bulky bsi and fuesbox then its worthwhile doing this? You can let me know how long it actually take Smile

Have you just adapted the basic guides on that site you sent me to the 206 or was there a specific diagram?

Did you manage to get the original terminals apart without breaking them or did you have to buy new ones?

Yeah, I've got the list of all the bits you need to build the loom. The biggest problem I'm facing is the hazard switch. The 206 one doesn't work like the old fashioned style one, it is just a momentary on-off to trigger the bsi. I'm not sure what to do with it yet, still working on that and seeing as I have 6 days till the car has to be running then I'm not too concerned and I'll sort it over the winter.

The only thing i really changed on them diagrams was to ditch the navigator horn switch and change the heated front window to operate the blower on full which I've already butchered and set to blow on the screen. Some terminals come apart ok, some didn't but you have loads left over like the fog like plugs so it's all good. Just buy new pins for them and I've crimped and soldered them. I think it will take me about 4 evenings to do the whole thing from scratch, but I am an aircraft electrician!! so if you can get your head around how to wire it you will be fine.

While you're down there Laughing

6kg, bon.

We felt the job of detailing the radiator needed a variety of screwdrivers.

Rear body loom is basically finished now. The observant amongst you will notice that it was originally fitted to the OS with a view to reducing the wire length from the body control unit behind the dash on the OS which then trailed over to the NS before going rearward. Then we realised we could reduce things yet further by re-routing everything NS via the glove-box fuse-box. So this is the final fix now I hope Laughing

Window job while we've got the sheet there waiting for the cut. Really nice stuff to work with.

Actually fitted in that last pic, shiny.

Holes are repainted after being drilled, don't worry the door was masked at that time Laughing

Other window in tomorrow as well as the backs going back in. Hopefully got some brake pipe jobs on as well if we finally get a bias valve Laughing

This backs up my theory about the new Cat Cams... They boast an increase in power over the standard cams using a piggyback management system. This is the proof that you dont need £400 odd in cams.... Just good management.....

I connected the speed signal wire from my gearbox to the speed sensor input on the dash but it didn't work. To be honest I haven't even had time to get into the settings and set it up so it still may work fine. It wasn't on my list of priorities for getting on track today. The only thing i had working was rev counter and oil pressure light. I'm going to sort all that out over the winter now and get it set up right.

What I can report back from today is that Oulton Park is brilliant fun! The car ran like a dream, the handling was nearly perfect, I had nice lift off oversteer, it was predictable, consistent and fast. Could really feel the difference from when it was in road trim.

The brakes are amazing, even though I had a leak from the bias valve and had to put half a litre of fluid in over the day Rolling Eyes I can see how people get p**sed off using 4 pots and ds2500's on the road, they are noisy as hell till you get them hot, and once they are, they really bite hard and you are literally held back by the harness.

I'll get some pics up soon Very Happy

Just management for now, but it does have a de-cat and competition exhaust.

imjeeves wrote:

I used a new "fine wood" blade in the jigsaw. trick is to not let it get hot and start to melt the plastic as you cut it. The stickers we made ourselves. My mate has a vinyl cutter so we borrowed it and already had the designs done off my other mates Puma. These ones are coming off though as they were a rush job and They are going on again but black and red.

Thanks for all the positive comments. Things will calm down for a while now as I have a few other projects on the go that need finishing off over winter but I'll keep this up to date with the engine rebuild.

Dash is from www.digitalspeedos.co.uk I haven't got the speedo working yet as I didn't have time before the track day and haven't been in the garage since! If it won't work off the standard speed sensor you can use the one which comes with the dash and just point it at a drive shaft. There are loads of different settings in the dash though depending on what type of speed pulse it receives so it will probably work ok once set up right. I also need to sort the fuel gauge out too, again, probably just needs setting up on the dash.

Group N competition engine mounts came yesterday so started fitting those. Only doing the top mount and gearbox mount for now as the lower one can be done once the diff arrives and I have the shafts off.

It's an Eaton M45. Was originally fitted to a Mini Cooper S then was on a Renault Spider. Got a spare engine on a stand to trial fit it to and make the brackets up on.

Fits where the air-con pump used to be but I'll be moving the oil filter.

Started making the bracket to hold the SC to the engine.

It is going where the aircon pump used to live and due to it's length I'm getting rid of the oil filter housing and making a take-off plate to move the filter out the way.

Anyway, let the pics do the talking

Just to note, in those above pics, the M 8 studded bar is 10mm too short and is only a temp fit! It will be longer and have a nut on top too.

Bracket is now finished and cold zinc galvanised.

Strange it didn't look like the charger I had on my cooper S. The M45s start to top out at about 270ish on the coopers but I think for a gti 250 is a decent target. The same as the Z22 engine does. 145bhp-250bhp with the sole addition of an M62 charger (the next size up).

Supercharger conversion has gone on the back burner for a while. Just had too much to do with all my other cars and toys to spend any time on it. Re-built it back to how it was for a track day at Donnington on the 13th. If anyone's there that day, pop over and say hi Smile

Hi Steven.
Sorry to revive your topic.
I've done a similar conversion to my 206gti using a non-intercooled eaton m62 setup. Unfortunately you will not squeeze too much outta your engine with the M45, you need to go big with M62 or M90.
Modifications were done to almost all car systems (exhaust, custom intake manifold - plenum-style with trumpet-like admission cones, reinforced clutch, 470cc injectors, custom belt, steering pump removal (switched to electric one), moved the throttle body, used Unichip piggyback, Bosch motorsport fuel pump, 63mm stainless steel exhaust, Quaife LSD etc etc). The car is now at about 208 HP@6600rpm and delivers constantly 240Nm from 1500 to 6500rpm. With this setup I have practically humiliated a Lotus Elise and a BMW 335i in drag races.
Biggest problem is HEAT. Too little space to place intercooler if aircon is kept. Will go to intercooler it this winter, if money are available (costs just for engine upgrade were about 4000 EUR if you want to do it seriously).
Setup runs at 0.8 bar with 2:1 pulley (custom aluminium one). With normal pulley only 0.4 bar were possible. With M45 results will be even less since it pumps less air per revolution and is dangerous to drive it over 14000 rpm if you use bigger engine pulley or smaller s/c one. It is also very dangerous to use standard pulley since it has rubber insertion and will not resist in time (s/c eats 30-40 HP at higher revs). Also for over 0.5 bar you need to decompress engine (used DP Engineering decompression plate).
You have a nice start here but more money are needed. I also think that supercharger may be too small for serious sensations.
I would like to attach pictures with dyno and engine but can't figure out the bloody button here.

well done on the car looks great..wondering if the quaife diff made a big difference on track??did it drop lap times by much??

In my case - no track. Car is for day use Very Happy However, lowering, strut bar and LSD are a must for 206, car is very unstable out of the factory. Will definitely decrease lap times since curves can be now entered with higher confidence with throttle on (off=suicide).
Compared with Golf 6 vanilla, 206 GTI is sh.ite when it comes to cornering. I also have a Golf 6 TFSI with DSG and using stock suspension and tyres, car is much safer Sad
206 GTI has OMP strut bar, Quaife ATB LSD, -40mm lowered suspension, Pirelli PZero Nero 205/40R17 tyres, OZ Racing GT 17" rims, Eibach Pro front springs, KYB ultra SR gas monotube sport shocks on front and back, 206RC rear suspension and Powerflex rear axle bushes. Yet still it is less stable than the Golf Sad
