#1: CD's GTi Author: CD-B3, Location: Salisbury / New ForestPosted: Wed May 19, 2010 3:42 am ---- CD's GTi
I had a 1.1 206 for a year and got pretty fed up of it being so slow (had an Audi A4 1.9 before) so I sold that (for a profit )
I really love the look of 206's so I started looking into GTi's & 180's
180's were out of my price range at the time so I found myself what seemed to be a nice GTi with only 2 previous owners.
However it was up in North Wales.
I traveled up on the train for 5 hours with a BAD case of food poisoning & I hadn't slept in 2 days
Got there and it seemed pretty nice, only a couple of small marks and I knocked down the price since a fog light didn't work
Day one the trouble started
I drove down to Swansea since I was going to stay with my girlfriend for a few days, got about 100 miles away from the dealer and the exhaust got louder... turned out the clamp for the rear silencer had come loose...
I stopped at a services and a kind AA man removed the backbox since it had been handing down very low.
So I was now driving with a bad case of food poisoning, deprived of sleep and had a terrible headache from the droning exhaust.
Got to Swansea and got a lot of funny looks from the locals, I luckily found a garage that would fit a new clamp on a Saturday at short notice so I got that done, £35.
On the 150 miles back to my house I noticed that the ride was a bit bumpy and the car was kind of veering about.
Turned out the front tyres were illegal and the wishbones needed replacing. £450
I exchanged a few letters and phone calls with the dealer and got a sum of money to cover the tyres.
The brakes needed replacing as they had a large lip, £200.
Next up was checking whether the cam-belt had been done as the delaer didn't know.
I found the garage that used to service the car, turned out that the previous owners reason for sale was that it was soon due a cambelt change
So another £400
It then behaved its self for a while, about 6 months. (Bar the Airbag Fault, more on that later)
Then one night at 1am when I was giving a friend a lift home after a night out, bang goes the engine, well more like a complete loss of power.
It turned out that the timing belt tensioner had failed and the cambelt slipped = pistons and valves colliding.
I was quoted £1200 for an engine rebuild, I queried that the car had only done 5k miles since the cambelt, tensioner & waterpump were changed and after a lot of phone calls, letters, busses and lifts, the garage gave in and agreed to rebuild the engine under warranty
How the garage left the engine when they diagnosed it.
There were bits all inside the car too.
So after a month off the road I was back on with a sweet running GTi
Next on the list of things to do was to get the 'Airbag Fault' sorted out. When I bought the car I was told that it had a faulty Com2000 and replacing that ought to sort the problem so £250 was taken off the sale price.
I bought a used Com2000 from here, turned out to be faulty so I returned it to the seller and it got damaged in the post
So for my birthday I asked my dad for an exciting Com2000 unit
Light goes off and stops beeping at me when ever I start the car
Next day... it comes back on, damn I was angry
Took it back to my local dealers to be sorted and turned out it was a dodgey connection under the seat.
Light stays off for about 3 months then came back on
Its currently at Peugeot having a diagnostic
So one way or another its going to cost me £88 for the labour & it its the com2000 again it will be under warranty, but if its the wiring it will be extra
Parts replaced:
Engine Head
Driveshafts
Wishbones
Droplinks x 2
Struts & components
Com2000 x2
PPT40
Tyres x6
Windscreen
Exhaust x 3
Brakes x 4
Engine breather hose
Lambda sensors x 2
Airbag wiring
Rear Lights
Wing Mirror
Heater blower motor
Battery
Fog Light
More to add once I'm home and have a look through its folder/book full of invoices
I now know that the car ought to last some time yet and it will soon be going for a re-spray. Only thing I'm worried about is the clutch, lets hope it lasts a good while yet! (Touches wood)
A few recent pictures
Had a go at colour coding a month or 2 back.
Phase 2 rear lights added
Had a Simota induction kit for a while.
(spot 206info on my work computer )
Taken it off for the warmer summer months.
Group N gear-linkages & Spoox motorsport quickshift
Phase 2 boot strip
(Lion badge has been added now)
Out in the New Forest with a friend in his 205 GTi
To put a face to a name.

#4: Re: CD's GTi Author: skard, Location: UK - NorthPosted: Wed May 19, 2010 3:53 am ---- ouch, after owning one 206 why did you buy another?! (only jesting).
unfortunately most of the problems were down to a lack of care from the last owner, and a bit of being a 'made on a friday afternoon' car. hopefully you'll not have much to do to it from now on, other than servicing.
you should invest in a PP2000 cable. it's the price of 2-3 dealer visits.

I should have kept the 1.1
It only needed a new Radiator & clutch in 1 year!
Next car will not be French!

Bloody scammers!

Stop making me laugh at work!
I keep getting funny looks.
No unfortunatly I won't be wearing it, its far too hot and I need to have a good amount of alcohol in me first
Car will hopefully have new parts fitted this week as it's creaking at the moment.

#29: Re: CD's GTi Author: CD-B3, Location: Salisbury / New ForestPosted: Sun Jun 06, 2010 2:09 pm ---- Fitted the new driveshaft, droplinks & ARB bushes, the car handles great again
Replacing the driveshaft was a lot easier than expected, however the wishbone was stubborn as.... well in the end we took the wish bone off too!
Work started at 3pm, finished at 7:30
The time flew, but it wasn't fun though
Got the machine polisher earlier today so I'll have a go at that tuesday.
Also cleaned the inside in prep for FCS.
#30: Re: CD's GTi Author: CD-B3, Location: Salisbury / New ForestPosted: Tue Jun 08, 2010 4:57 pm ---- Today was a VERY busy day
It started yesterday evening, the rain let out so I decided to wash the car while I could in preparation for the machine polisher.
Autofoam snow foam & 2 bucket & wash mit hand washed.
Then took into the garage to dry with microfibre towels.
This morning at 10 I clayed the bonnet & bumper, doors and wings were done last week.
Then I got to work, used a Meguiars dual action machine polisher, Menzerna intensive cutting & final finish polish & Sonus polishing & finishing pads.
The results were amazing
Before:
The paintwork was looking a bit dull, blotchy and had a lot of swirls.
50/50 I went over the lot again, this was my test patch.
Unfortunatly it rained this morning
Still you can see that the paintwork looks a lot better.
Then once the entire car was polished I snow foamed and rewashed with the 2 bucket method, then towel dried.
Next up was the wax, used Nattys blue paste wax, it smells great & is nice to work with & left a great finish.
Then buffed with microfibre cloths.
Then came the task of cleaning the wheels, the drivers one was particualary bad with a large build up of CV joint grease.
Products used were Bilberry wheel cleaner, Turtle-wax alloy wheel clean, Turtle-Wax 'Nano-tech' wax for wheels & Autoglym instant tyre dressing.
I took off all the wheels to clean them, repainted the calipers, cleaned the pads & discs & cleaned out the mudflaps.
Oh and I also tried smooth peanut butter on parts where I had got wax on the black plastic bump strips. It works great! Only a little is needed and the results are better than the stuff I bought in a bottle.
Total time spent - 12 hours
Anyway thats all for now, time to get some sleep.
Edit: Pics added, sorry for quality, were taken with my phone.
Will borrow my work camera tonight. Last edited by CD-B3 on Wed Jun 09, 2010 9:28 am; edited 2 times in total

#33: Re: CD's GTi Author: CD-B3, Location: Salisbury / New ForestPosted: Thu Jun 17, 2010 4:08 am ---- A big change to the car, spot the difference
Before:
After:
DJ-XS wired them up for me at FCS and I fitted them there
Also decided to buy some track time when I was there, was great fun
Decided that I will be upgrading my brakes, probably to GTi180 ones since I cooked mine pretty bad on the track, pretty scary when you lose your brakes going 110mph!
Brakes were smoking afterwards, and the paint had bubbled on the calipers!
If anyone has some calipers for sale let me know.

A Saxo spun out, had to brake hard & someone clipped a stack of tyres, 5 of them rolled out onto the track, had to brake and evade.

Thanks for your input
I like them, they give the car a much more aggressive look.
I'm keeping the Crystal lights so I can always revert them back if I get tired of them.
#38: Re: CD's GTi Author: CD-B3, Location: Salisbury / New ForestPosted: Thu Jul 22, 2010 8:37 am ---- Quick update.
New droplinks are needed and the Airbag Fault came back the other day
Car is currently at Peugeot getting the issue fixed free of charge
Will update the post later with details of what else the Airbag fault can be for future reference.
#39: Re: CD's GTi Author: Ruffy_206, Location: BristolPosted: Thu Jul 22, 2010 8:43 am ---- just done my droplinks the other day along with a few other bits feels like a different car now
thats not to bad the stealers are doing it free.
#40: Re: CD's GTi Author: CD-B3, Location: Salisbury / New ForestPosted: Fri Jul 23, 2010 9:49 am ---- Just got the car back from the Peugeot dealership, they were unable to recreate the fault but when the light came on was recorded in the ECU's memory.
What they did was check all connections:
- The side airbag wiring under the seats, they're ok since Peugeot spliced the wires for me in the past when the connector broke.
- The Airbag ECU's connecters were cleaned up, however they were on pretty well and that is unlikely to be the problem.
- The Com2000 was replaced last November and so that is fine.
- There is a connector that goes from the Airbag ECU that spilts off into 2 directions, one to the drivers sidem the other the passenger. The connection seemed a little loose and has a small amount of play so they cut it out and hard wired the exisitng wires together to eliminate the chance of that being the problem.
Hopefully thats the end of it, the work carried out today was free of charge.
This has now cost me £450, I hope this helps other people that have the issue.
#41: Re: CD's GTi Author: CD-B3, Location: Salisbury / New ForestPosted: Mon Jul 26, 2010 2:30 am ---- Another few issues
Saturday night the front passenger arch liner came loose and disintergrated. Also the captive nut that holds the resonator/airbox bracket on fell out.
Oh and a plastic tesco bag melted on the end of my exhaust so I've got a lump of plastic stuck there
