Hi guys
I feel a little embarrassed about coming here for advice and having little in the way of knowledge to offer in return, but I am drawing a blank lately and wonder whether some helpful folk here can help with this.
I recently loaned my girlfriend some money to buy a cheap runaround and she made a royal mess of it. Further to this I then purchased myself a pretty little thing for which she is very envious.
She has eyes on the 206. She likes the styling and that's her main concern really. She's 21, and a careful driver, so doesn't have much interest in the 2.0 litre which would only cost her more.
Her only real requirement is the colour. She's pretty much dead set on black.
What advice can you give on looking at 206's. I've seen the beginner's guide and many a post on common faults, but I need something a little more concrete for basing this search.
Are the 1.1 litres worth avoiding? They seem very common around here.
Some of the lower end specs seem archaic, at what level would one begin to take notice of these sales?
We're looking at spending around £3,000. Is this a sensible budget? It would seem so on the research that I have done over the past few days, but can anybody shed further light into this?

It really depends on what you want.
Are you after a no thrills run around or something to mod (engine or looks, etc).
One of the things I like about the 206 range is that there's a model for so many different requirements (if that make sense). EG: You want something a little sporty? Go for a GTi or GTi 180. You want style? Go for a quiksilver. You want a dis**l go for a HDi. You want a run around? Get a 1.1! etc etc.

But i love my little 1.1, its been great.
I must admit i was set on black when i started looking for a 206, but then the one i own came up from a family friend, so i decided to go ahead with it.
I modified it how i wanted, based on looks alone really, I can't say my 1.1 is slow, it keeps up with 1.4's as i think the bhp difference between these 8v'ers is about 15. not that much when you think about it.
Also if you look at my car, i've upgraded most of the 'low spec' items. which i think is a great benefit

I think that's a fairly sensible budget.
If she's that age she may seem to find the 1.1's a bit lethargic.
I had a 1.4 as my first car and had it for nearly 2 and a half years.
I'm not sure what you would find for your budget but by the looks of autotrader you can get a decent 1.4 16v with aircon at around 30k miles in black, on a '55 plate.
I'd just check the standard things - condition of interior/exterior. And check out the service history and try and judge if the previous owner has driven it hard.
Most problems tend to be fairly obvious though, if you're really uneasy perhaps get another member to come and take a look with you?

Another thing that I like is the 206 style is still kind of in "fashion". Even though it was first produced in 1998 (someone prove me wrong if this is wrong please) it is still within todays styling 12 years on!
(PS I am totally going off on one about lovin 206s... blame the bottle of JD )

2003 plate 1.1 from dealer = £3000
51 plate 2.0 gti from dealer = £3000
Again it depends on dealer or private, mileage, owners, etc etc

for that price range, i recon you could get a nice looking Black, XSI
Which will have all the GTi outside looks, and a pretty decent 1.6 16v engine too.

If you are after a cheap, reliable 206 then the 2.0 HDi is your safest bet. Later models will be cheaper to tax, the Eco HDi's fall into the £35.00 a year road tax bracket too! Newer 2.0 HDi's also use the same turbo as the DV6

Yep your all right, My track car is one of the first ever made 206's, which is on a S reg, Registered on 2nd Sept 98

Very helpful stuff guys.
G. I did discuss this with her - it's one of the only things I knew, but she seems concerned with running a diesel around town almost soley. Any idea how it would handle this in a 206?
Drake, big fan of the early start on the weekend you are getting!
I think I overpaid recently for mine, but family owned from new with all receipts for everything was worth a lot to me as I'm planning to 70 mile commute 3/4 times a week!
PugJH, I do like that. She's much more down the line than perhaps she should be, with OTT parents. How much of the work you've done would effect her insurance? In your opinion are the 1.1 petrols reliable? I think I might just be pessimistic because it's the smallest engine and I imagine that means it's been skimped on...
