Hi recently my car has been ever so slightly misfiring, went to use it this morning and is was alot worse to the extent it became unuseable. Opened the bonnet and checked the oil filler cap found mayonaise, first thought headgasket failure. Going to have a proper look this afternoon and want to rule out or in a headgasket failure, so basically what are the symtoms and easy ways of checking if it is a head gasket failure?

Thanks in advance

- White stuff (mayo) in oil and/or on bottom of oil cap
- Running bad
- Using water
- Lots of white smoke (and i mean lots)

Can't think of anymore atm

If its giving out thick white smoke when you rev it then head gasket failure and needs to replaced ASAP!!!

A quick way to check: Look at your spark plugs; if coolant squirts out, you definitely have a blown head gasket!

bubbles of air coming up into your radiator (remove cap before starting); a leaking radiator; milkshake-colored oil; overheating; rough running; coolant or oil running from head; spark plug(s) that have a green tint (if green coolant); white-colored or sweet-smelling exhaust.

Right just been out to check in more detail, the coolant is murky allways has been, but around the top of the coolant bottle there is gunk . Took the spark plugs out and there dry no signs of coolant etc.

The oil on the dipstick is nothing abnormal, it hasnt been overheating as such a couple of weeks ago i noticed it started to get warmer quicker, but never got any higher than 90c when the fan kicks in. When it first happened i checked the coolant level and has not dropped significantly, when this happened i thought of the head gasket failing so checked the oil filler cap and all was normal.

Its not clear whether white smoke is coming out the exhaust atm as it has developed a blowing around the cat, but does appear to be giving white smoke out, nothing to thick though.
