A few weeks ago my battery started having problems. Some mornings it would start other morning especially if it was cold there was not enough oomph to start it. At the end of the day it would start just fine.
I bought a new battery but have had the same problems now the cold weather has arrived, and it won't start in the cold evenings as well.
This is the battery I bought EBay Battery
I have tried disconnecting the battery in case there was a drain, but this has made no difference. If the weather is mild then it is fine.
This evening I had to call my breakdown service out. He jump started the car and said that the alternator was charging fine but thought that the problem was that my battery was not big enough and that I needed at least a 60ah battery in this cold weather rather than the 44ah battery I have.
Anyone have any thoughts on this?

Is it a petrol or diesel engine?
The AA man is correct, 44Ah is a bit on the low side, you really need at least a 60Ah battery as this size comes into its own during winter periods, and absolutely no less than 60Ah for a diesel engined car. Meanwhile, check the earth from the gearbox to the chassis for a good connection.

If the ebay seller actually recommended this 44Ah battery for your car then you will be able to return it to him as 'not suitable' for either a refund or an exchange for the correct battery (you pay any difference in price)..........if the seller refuses to co-operate you can force him to act via ebay resolution centre, you need to lodge a complaint within 45 days of receiving the battery I use ebay quite a lot and you have buyer protection rights just as you do if you buy from a high St shop.
Just recently bought a new battery for my 1.4 hdi, a 'Yuasa', 063, 60Ah', £63 from my local motor factors.

44Ah defo too low for a 1.6, might be worth trying a return/exchange to ebay man.

Varta / Bosch evertime
Doesn't matter which as Varta make them both
Pay the extra & go for a Varta Silver Dynamic or Bosch Silver, they come with a 5 year warranty.
Varta recommend there C30 battery for your 1.6 petrol 206.
If you want the biggest one that fit's in the battery box with even more power go for the D15
Ask your local Varta dealer & motor factor for price's
Don't even think about Halford's even with the trade card there a rip off for Bosch batteries.

Really p****d off now. Exactly the same things happens with brand new Varta battery. Fine when the battery is first fitted, at the end of the day it will not start. Cold starting definite no-no. Once started and warmed up will start everytime.
The alternator has already been checked and is charging the battery. I have tried disconnecting the battery in case there is a drain on it and the same thing still happens.
206 1.6 XS Petrol 1998
What else could be causing this?

Assuming all earth connections are fine, i would suggest the starter motor might be the culprit, the armature windings can get 'tired' and cause problems as they become temperature sensitive. When next time it wont start, try hitting the starter motor quite sharply while at the same time someone is holding the key in the start position and see if it makes any difference.

I went out and had a look at the -ve lead from the battery. The lead is approx 30cm long and then there is a joint that has been wrapped up in insulation tape and then the lead continues on and is fixed to a part of the "engine" (sorry difficult to see what it actually fixed to) After the joint the cable is approx 1/2 the diameter of the bit that joins onto the battery - is this normal? Are there any other connections that I should check? I am trying to eliminate the simple stuff first, but think that it is time to send it into the garage!

Connect a jump lead from the negative pole of the battery directly to the engine block to diagnose if its an earth problem.

Sounds like it needs a new - lead fitting.
Lead should go from the - battery terminal down to the top of the gearbox where the first terminal is bolted down, then it loops off from there & bolts on to the bodyshell with the 2nd terminal.
Its simple diy to fit, you need to remove the battery & also the battery box, thats only held in with 3 bolts.
