I'm sure I've got air in it or something, it's so inconsistent. That and the fact it creaks! :/

Start the engine, take reservoir cap off turn steering full lock both ways a couple of times top up if needed and maybe put some power steering conditioner in this helps lubricate the seals, hope this helps.

Thanks. Is there ever a need to drain it?

No dont think so only time i did was when it all leaked out ,
but no never heard of having to change power steering fluid before just make sure its topped up to max.
If it creaks when you turn wheel you mean ,could be a few things but not power steering fluid dont think.

Thanks. I was thinking more about the inconsistent feel/weight of the steering rather than the creaking. Thought the fluid might need changing or something. The local motor factors sold me 2 liters of fluid because I said I wanted to change it. Might be taking that back then!

Yes there is a way to bleed it. Top it up till it is to the full level on the dip stick. Turn it fully left till it hits the stop. hold it there for 2 seconds, then same to the right. repeat that. get out and top up if needed. repeat it till it won't take any more fluid.
