A good service will help
Plugs, Filters (performance panel filter if you like) etc.
Fault Code Clear may help a bit too.
Drop the pressure in the front tyres to increase contact area with the tarmac, this will reduce a bit of wheelspin and will get you some traction. Over inflating the tyres will just leave you spinning the wheels.
Warm the tyres up on the concrete pad before the start line, handbrake up, clutch dump and get some heat into them.
Strip as much of the interior out as you can, remove spare wheel etc.
As little fuel as possible
Empty washer bottle (there's a Kg or 2 in there!)
Practice your launches, as little wheelspin as possible, but as much acceleration as possible
What condition are you gearbox, clutch, engine mounts in?

What is the point? The cars will be so evenly matched it will take 30 miles for one to start pulling away from the other.

ive driven both engines and there’s not much in it tbh. the zetec is slightly more aggressive i think.
having said that you are definitely in with a chance of winning. what mileage do both the cars have, if ones on 100k+ and the others been in a garage its whole life that will make a difference!
as said before its important that you practice your starts because thats the main thing. also giving it a service like you suggest is a good idea, because your going to be thrashing it if nothing else :p.
also make sure you have just enough fuel lol. fuels heavy, you would be surprised what difference half a tank of weight can make.
also take out any bits you can lol, if your boots like mine, the spare wheel and a million random heavy tools etc.
as with the tyres, i dunno if they would be better over or under inflated. look into it
99 petrol wont make a difference, cant hurt tho lol depends if it will make you feel faster haha.
also learn when through the rev range is best to change gear, i.e not too soon or too late.
finally, dont forget to get somebody (not an idiot) to film it so you can post the video up on here when the race is over
Visualise the WIN, hahaha
EDIT: also there's a good chance he might mess his engine management up by f*****g around with induction kits etc, that might help you. persuade him to amateur mod the s**t out of his engine hahaha

As someone else said, take the seats out, and empty the boot. They did a similar test on Top Gear, modifying a Renault Avantime V6, but they f****d up, obviously they did new brakes, wheels, tyres, spoiler (which failed) splitter (again, failed) but they didn't touch the ECU, even though they took it on a Rolling Road, they just gave it service, if they had remapped it they would of gained some extra horses
