So, final ECU diagnostic points towards Hydraulic lifter replacement. Now on here this was suggested as the cause of my problems long ago by Edward (thank you) but I thought I would waste some money in the mean time trying everything else first.
I'm also on the pug206cc forum blah blah blah, and they also say yeah common fault you'll need to get your tappets changed......uh... er...tappets? I was told lifters?!!
What is the differance between these two bits please? are they the same bit known by different names? Or do I have the added expense or making sure both are replaced incase it's either or?
Any help?

all i know it if you need to replace them, you will need to replace all of them, can't use replace 1 or 2.
and they don't come cheap.
make sure you buy the peugeot oem stuff too
cam followers, lifter, tappet, all are the same thing

Yes they are the same thing. Will you be so kind and let us know if this fixes your issues. As I mentioned before, I have all the same issues as you have but unfortunately dont have the cash to change parts as you did.I know I sound like a leecher, and I'm sorry...:)), but it seems that you are the closest to resolving what has long been an ongoingissue for a lot of people

Thanks guys Wikipedia had since confirmed this also.
@ Twincam, no worries, if i was in your shoes I would do the same, someone needs to be the first. unforunately for my wallet, its me this time. At least my ramblings will be of use hopefully.
People are saying use pug parts only. Anyone know the prices of these? and I've also heard changing to the 1.8 307 tappets save oil and they are a refined design that last longer? any ideas on that?
Finnaly as these as are related to valve clearances I'm assuming i will need one per valve. 16 valve engine means that even at the eurocarparts pattern part prices of 20quid a tappet I'm looking at a parts cost without labour, gaskets or cosumables of £320!!
Ahhhh brill!!!!

Sell a car I have spent £900 on getting right for 2k less than I paid for it a year a go? Or pay another £600 to have is 100% (for a time at least)
I'm past the point where I can cut my losses with the car. And I dont want to sell a car with problems on to someone else, thats if they dont even notice the lack of cylinders 3 and 4 when test drving it.
If a sell up, by another car, nice drive, low milage, FSH from a dealer (like this one) there's a chance i could have expense all over again. Better the devil you know... as they say.

Get a second hand engine with warranty or have yours fully reconditioned, It will cost a bit more but you will have the peace of mind of being covered by a warranty in-case something does go wrong

You can dismantle the lifters and clean them...might work but you've got strip down costs but you could also save a lot of £'s so it's a risk.
16 new lifters from Peugeot cost me about £360 last year.

@ Seabrook, I get ya mate, I will be getting originals I was purely looking at the pattern parts to get a rough idea on price.
@ Edward. Cheers for that that given me a fugure to save up to roughly.
I've been told that it will be arund 7 hours labour stripping everything down, removing the cam belt and cams etc. But they have never done this before. So the garage quoted me £200.
So all in we are talking £560-£600 for everything hopefully.
Does £200 in labour seem about right? whether or not it does take 7 or so hours?
