hi all!
right to start off i had my head gasket replaced maybe 5 months ago, it showed signs of the gasket going by it creaming in the expansion bottle (which i thought was strange as i swear it usually creams in the oil.. but im no mechanic Cool )
so that got replaced and the cooling system was flushed a few times and degreased then filled with coolant, i was warned by the mechanic at the time that i would probably need a new radiator but did not purchase at the time.. he also replaced the thermostat. the car ran fine i wore the gasket in correctly and then when i began to drive it normally again found that when going up hills/ over 60mph the temperature would go up to 100 and then the fan would kick in. I continued to drive it normally until finally a few weeks ago i bought a new rad and it was all lovely. But now that the weather is hitting mid 20's its struggling to keep the heat down as before and ive done a few motorway drives since the new rads been in and it wont keep it down if your going over 70 *coughcough* im just wondering if anyone else has had the same problem and if so how they fixed it. I've basically thrown soo much money at the car now fixing various things that were wrong that i dont wanna just chuck money in the dark anymore so ive come to the people with experience!

any help would be much appreciated Very Happy

i also have a small amount of creaming in my expansion tank.. eeek. how much did you have before you got it changed?

What size rad has it got fitted?

The stupid tiny one or the better bigger one?

Ive seen some 1.1 / 1.4 206s with a tiny rad fitted Confused

i noticed it early on but drove it easily for about 300 miles the gasket didnt actually go but it couldnt of been far off

errrr i just got the exact same one as was there in the first place, wheres the size difference? the width?
i was thinking my air con doesnt work and im a stinge anyway Laughing so if i took the condenser out from in front of the radiator will that help?

You should have the larger rad if it had aircon

I take it there isnt an airlock in the cooling system & that the cooling fan is working?

Shame your aircon system isnt as that would test the cooling fan Wink

the air con just blows out hot air? thats how i came to the conclusion of it not working.. gonna test that in a minute and see if the fan is working but im certain it is because when im driving along and the temp goes just over 100 it starts to go down so im guessing it does but i'll come back to you on that..
as for an air lock im certain i filled it up correctly and then ran it while opening the bleed screw on the heater matrix and on the right hand side of the engine

i just ran the car and the fan kicked in around 95 degrees so the fan does work but turned off again before the temperature had gone down again, probs stayed on for around 2 mins

Ive done exactly the same as you mate, new head gasket, thermostat and rad on my 1.4 8V. It now runs slightly hotter than before (87-92 ish on a run) but Im used to it now and all seems fine. It does stay around 90 on the motorway but goes back to normal when driving slower. I wouldn't worry about it, it's just not what you're used to.
An Ex '03 1.4 GLX driver, German technology all the way now.

My coolant gauge sits around 90 deg C this time of year once the car is warmed up.

Pretty normal temp for the TU3 lump.

Even if the oil temp is up around 115 deg C hammering down the motorway the coolant still sits around 90 deg C

my gti sits at about 90 if i sit still goes up to the next bar then the fan kicks in and goes back down nothgn wrong with that, Jedwards wer are you from if your local and have any probs i don't mind having a look Smile

yeah mine definitely runs exactly the same! what about when your speeding? does my nut in because im constantly thinking about what if the head gasket goes because its under a lot of strain..
