I had one and apart from eating wishbones every 6-8 months and being thirsty. The only issue i had was the TU5JP4 engines can suffer from the water jacket on the head gasket going, so they leak water from the front right hand side of the engine block.

The 2.0 HDI engine is basically bulletproof, there worth at least a test drive if you do the mileage to justify running a diesel

Haha, seriously though, any common faults on them? Like the 1.4 gearboxes giving up religiously? |
If its a petrol XSI it will have the same MA type of gearbox as your 1.4
If its the HDI powered version it will be a BE gearbox.
There isnt anything wrong with a MA gearbox if its used correctly |
How would you define...correctly???

I know it is, every peugeot my parents have had in the last 12 years has had the 2.0 HDI. Never had any problems with them at all. I know a diesel probably would make more sense. But dont ask why, but I seriously couldnt live with one. I'd bring it home after buying it and the first thing i'd do is set the thing on fire.
I want something that's a bit more sporty but without stupid running costs. The 1.6 seems to fit the bill quite nicely. I know if I do decide to really cane it on my favourite roads it will drink more than what my 1.4 does. But if I drive it a similar style to what I do with the 1.4 it should average out pretty similar.

Even things like suspension components? I'd have thought it would be a little stiffer etc?

I wouldn't say their is really if so maybe rear disc brakes, other than that a engine with a little more power and grunt.

Nope, not lowered at all. Always used oem pug wishbones but it chewed them constantly. The water leak is a new uprated head gasket i think? I just kept topping it up till i traded it.
Dont get me wrong, it was a half decent specced car really, i just hated its crap build and constantly having to put my hand in my pocket to fix one thing or another. I bought it pretty much straight away after seeing it as it was a very good price and i needed a car straight away (got it from a dealer). In retrospect i probably should have done a bit more searching but as said i needed the car asap.

Ah right fair enough. Ill probably end up changing the gasket then. If I get one I will want to put the cams and intake off a 106 GTI or Saxo VTs in it.

Does anybody here know what bits I would need to salvage from a 106 GTi or Saxo VTs to take it from the 110 to 125?
