Ok, so my car is making the above noise when accelerating between maybe 2000 and 3500 RPM.
It's not tapping at Idle and the tappets are only a few hundred miles old so it's not them.

I've read about the common manifold rattle and armed with the print out of the 4 pipes I shoot off to the local exhaust place.
I say I have a rattle, it's either this (shows paper with manifold pipes) or the olive clamp that holds the midsection to the manifold.

They check the car over no rattles from the manifold at all but the back box is ruined. I kind of knew this was dying and after hearing them bang the back box and hearing the baffles rattle like a good'un I decide ok sod it I need a new one. Will this take care of the noise?
I'm assured yes it will.

So I get it fitted and I now have a pretty much brand new entire system. (mid section and cat replaced a month or so ago)
I pick the car up as they are closing and as I drive away the noise is still bloody there.

So one of two things has happened;

When I asked them to rev test it they didn't rev high enough to get the rattle/tap going and when the inspected the manifold itself they missed any movement that may have been there.

Or two it's it not the mani and it's something else, but what???!!!

The noise sounds like it's coming from the centre console, engine side of the firewall but slightly under the car.

Yes I know it sound suspiciously like the location of the manifold but what else "could" it be?

I had the same issue and it was the baffles inside the middle silencer, it was only 2 months old aswell, replaced it with a custom stainless from cat back and no more rattles since

I've had all the heat sheilds checked and welded before and there are none near the area the noise is coming from that I can see.

And the noise was there before the new midsection, just got worse recently. Probably becuase the rest of the car is now silent (or as close to as a french car can be) after all the work done.

sounds like incorrect valve clearance to me, if the gap between the rockers and the valves is too big that would make the tapping noise you are hearing

buy it, fix it, mod it

Hydraulic tappets are auto adjusting and would have been my first bet if they haddn't already been replaced and the noise was present at idle and when being reved. But it's only when under load between 2200-3000rpm

i got the same problem with my car, it sounds like a hollow ticking noise from the engine bay, the funny thing is it only happens when i accelerate, in idle its quiet and when i de-accelerate you cant here it??? it f**king annoying, when i hit the motor way it goes away after 3500 rpm and when im just cruising along its fine but the noise is starting to get worse

£400 to weld the 4 internal pipes at the bottom of the manifold? Thats more than what I would call step! Are they gold plating the welds?

If the coil pack is fuzzing up, I would have thought it would have other systoms or make the noise throughout the revs?

Mines not the coil pack as I had the noise before and after getting a new one

Have you checked the manifold gasket? That is what my annoying tapping sound has turned out to be, and I had the same symptoms you have. Smile

No 400 quid to replace the manifold
