My hdi under acceleration makes what only can be descibed as a chuffing noise between 2500 and 3500 rpm. There is no lack of acceleration or anything. There is also excessive engine movement and a reletively rough idle which may be related. Any ideas would be appreciated as the sound is really worrying.

i have 1.4 hdi and i had kinda the same problem turned out to be an injector leak the part is about 12p a copper washer but it cost £200 to get the copper washer put in

Glen, can you be more specific what the issue was that you had? We've just acquired an unloved 1.4 HDi and the engine sounds a bit 'odd' at times. Not detrimentally and no lack of performance, just sounds a bit gruff at times. Thanks! Ads

On this subject does anyone know how to get the injector out cheaply and without destroying the injector or head as at the moment i cannot afford any special tools or to replace anything expensive. Also on this engine are the injectors coded to the ECU or are they exchangable with another hdi.
