Sounds like dodgy fuel pump or pipework to me. When was the fuel filter last changed, and was a genuine part or decent aftermarket, or cheap filter used?

Worth a good look at it, and the fuel pipework. Its possible for rubber low pressure lines to crack, and/or the top of a fuel filter to rust, this causes small holes and air is drawn in which causes misfires and/or poor or non starting. With 1500 miles to go, it would probably be worthwhile changing the fuel filter early - other things such as a blockage in it, or excessive water in the diesel, can cause non starting or running too. I don't suppose you ever let the fuel tank run really low, at any stage? This can draw debris into the fuel system.
Also, how many miles has the car done?

Thats a good idea I will go and service the car then see what happens. It has done 107000 miles.
