Me and my GF bought a W Reg 206 LX last year for £1K2 - it had 2 previous owners and 34K on clock - it was immac - what a bargain we thought - finally something good happened to us .... then 4 month later the trouble started - it just will not start consistently.
Short story ; started off being hestitent but would start after 3-4 tries. Ended up sometimes not starting at all - sometimes would if you left it 10 mins. One dark night wouldnt start she called reocvery who triggered then reset emergency fuel cut out switch [this was after multiple attempts at various toher things] and then it started. Very next day woudlnt start so I bypassed the emergency cut out switch. Made no difference. We took it to PMD and it didnt fault. Took it home and it faulted straight away. We took it back 2 days later and the next day they rang us to say it had faulted and a diag would be £65 - later that day they said to her "We think we have found it - will you auth 2 hours labour" - course she said yes. At 5:45 they rang her and said that it hadnt fixed it but she owed them £200 - oh, right thanks for that.
Trial and error on my part found that unplugging every connector under hood then repluggin back in would sometimes get it to start. Then I made a big discovery in that if you put key in, turned to all lights on and left it for say 4 mins - it would always start. So, thats what we have done for months. Only wish I had found that out before losing £200.
However ..... now its back to refusing to start. You never smell fuel even with foot to floor for 3 mins whlst turning over. Day before yesterday again got stuck at work and called out recovery. He sprayed something at some part of the fuel pump and it started. He said that it may have a 'lazy fuel pump' and to get it checked - only we where told on 2 occasions that the pump was fine? And was it it jsut a coincidence and nothing at all to do with pump?
I am wondering if the ECU has a leaky capacitor or something and that is causing it to not tell the pump to kick in?
Any comment / suggestiosn appreciated!

you sure he spray things onto the fuel pump? it local under the rear seat and is secure with rivt; not the easily thing to remove and i doubt AA man will even touch it.
fuel pump tends to fail over time but if the garage hook up to the computer he should be able to tell if the rail pressure is fine

just spoke to her and she said he sprayed something and it was under bonnet so guess that rules the fuel pump out. Amazingly she did not get the guys name / number so we can give him a buzz and ask more questions. mad thing ; when it runs its perfect.

that sounds like Starting Fluid to me. ether base fluid which help ignition as they flash very easily.
sounds like you got a weak spark to me.
check if the coilpack and spark plug are good. what brand are they?
would check the main earthing point as well

Has it got a Sagem coil pack fitted?
Hasnt got NGK spark plugs in has it?
Has it had the coil pack wiring mod done to pin 4 on the connector plug?
Coolant temp sensor would be on my list of things to check to.
Also when was the fuel filter last replaced?
Have you cleaned the silicone grease of the engine ecu connectors?
Transponder aerials do fail on non plexed 206's & they will turn over fine with the immobiliser still armed.
Hope the timing belt has been done recently.

Timing belt at 40k?
The first garage checked loads of stuff and replaced temp sensor and crank sensor - oddly I noticed that the fan someitmes would be on at cold?
It could start run for an hour then 10 mins later not start.

Complete hit or miss when starting with no hint of trying to start but otherwise car runs fine once started sounds like symptoms of a crank/rpm sensor fault especially as you are getting no fuel smell. ECU won't put fuel or sparks in until it knows the engine is turning at certain minimum rpm from the crank sensor and it knows which cylinder is on compression stroke from the cam sensor. So without an rpm signal it just sits there waiting for the engine to start turning (or so it thinks).

SOUNDS LIKE EASY START BUT BE CAREFULL WITH IT because ENGINES GET USED TO IT...THEY LIKE THE STUFF AND EVENTUALY GET HOOKED.
