Hi,

Have noticed over the past few weeks that my gear shift is getting stiffer, bit notch. Goes into gear ok, just a bit harder than normal. When sitting staionary I can hear a squeak from the stick (like the bottom ball area has run out of grease). Gearbox oil etc all recently replaced.

Have popped off the gear stick cover and can see it seems a bit dry in there. Anyone know what grease to use here? or WD40 type stuff?

Any help appreciated, not stopping driving or causing any real issues. Just the squeaks are annoying.

Many thanks,

SM

what oil did you put in?

i bet you put in the "normal" 75w90 oil

and don't quote me but i don't think you need any grease on the gear rod/ linkage system..

Im having exact same problem, and until I can get car jacked and heat shield off etc all I can do is loosen the 4 nuts and spray grease down there.
It is quite intemittent though, somedays its ok, some days sounds like rats gots its knackers stuck on my gear lever!

Hi, thanks for the replies. Definately used the correct stuff for the gearbox. Can't remember what it was exactly but got the info from this site. The real smelly stuff which lingers for ages, with the little spout to aid putting in the gearbox. Had to do it when I changed the CV joints as one pulled out and p**sed gearbox oil everywhere.

Seemed to have some grease under the gearstick leather bit (inside the car), was a grease boot over the top of the ball end, so assume some grease there for something Did have an attempt to put some grease on this morning, seemed to make a small difference but was in work clothes and was dark so might have another go at the weekend.

Will let you know any outcome (although going to look at a new car at the weekend so may just end up chopping the GTI in)

Thanks for your help

If its sticking, it will be the gearbox. There is a balljoint on the gearlinkage, behind the engine. You will have to reomve the battery, doesnt need greasing though.
