Hi everyone im a new owner to a 2000 gti, hope someone can help me but on idle there like a knock sound coming from behind or near steering wheel and sometimes while driving, look in engine bay and cant see anything out the normal. If i sit in the car an give it a little rev it goes then back again on idel, could that be heat shield or sumit, as it runs fine. Tappits are loud but i can live with that.

anyone help?
Doesnt do it all the time while i drive so i know its not engine or running gear, are manifold on these car rattle some times or any boxs or clamps that could make a noise.
Just to try and explaine the sound, when idle on some times i can hear it then a little rev it goes and then when car settles its back.
or when driving can hear it till hit higher rpm and then goes for a bit and comes back.
Please someone help so i know what it could be

try the heat shields by the exhaust, including the ones under the car, my brother in law has a focus st170 that does the same, and that was the cause on his, the only other thing i can suggest is to check the exhaust itself, i know when i took mine into get it looked at, the backbox sits within a few mm of the spare wheel cage, this causes a knocking like you mentioned, the cure is to bend the cage brackets to give it some clearence.
mine is a HDi GTi, so basically the same car...

There is a known noise issue with the manifold.
The 4 tubes inside can rattle / knock together, official Peugeot fix is remove the manifold & weld the ends of the tubes together & then weld to the outer.

I had the exact same issue but was more of a annoying rattle then a knock, I unbolted the manifold from engine and centre action then wiggled it out (easiersaid then done) and then spot welded in the same places that is said above and put it back on and all the rattling under load was gone.
