Thanks Jamie, I'll contact you when the funds will be available if you'll still have it Wink But we need to sort out the mechanical things first before we move onto electronics Smile

Do the balancing shafts make the sump deeper than the one on the EW10?

Do you want measurements from both 138 cams? I've got some wrapped up in a cupboard upstairs. If you want any measurements let me know. I've also got a Piper 270 degree inlet cam to measure.

This is the inlet cam. I've just measured the max lobe diameter and the minimum and the difference is 8.8mm so I think it's a standard cam. I'll have to compare it to one i have in another head which is known to be standard.

Anyway, starting at the pulley end of the camshaft, the bearings meaure:
29.96mm, 29.48mm, 28.98mm, 28.43mm, 28mm.

Do you want the exhaust cam measurements too?

2001 GTi 138, Bilstein Sprint dampers, H&R springs, 21mm Peugeot Sport torsion bars, 22mm rear ARB, Peugeot Sport Group A wishbones, 283mm discs, Goodridge stainless hoses, Maniflow 304 grade 4-2-1 2.5" manifold and system, 200 cell cat, Richard Longman head, 45mm Jenvey throttle bodies, 9.5mm TB spacers, 90mm air horns, Jenvey throttle linkage, Jenvey fuel rail, Aeromotive and Goodridge fuel fittings and braided hose, ITG sausage filter, Radtec custom radiator, Piper Ultimate Road cams, Piper vernier pulleys, Omex 600 ECU. Thanks Edward, I really appreciate it. Could you please also measure the exhaust one, though I presume it should be the same.

As for the sump we haven't measured it but as far as I can remember it's quite a bit deeper.

Let's continue:

Thanks to Edwards measurements we now also know that the GTi cams will fit as the bearings match Wink

All the pistons and cylinders were measured and we came to the conclusion, that the engine is in good condition. There is 0,05mm play between the cylinder walls and piston skirts. there is also no damage visible to the piston ring beds so the engine. We still need to check the main shaft bearings, because we ran out of time yesterday.

This is how the tool for measuring cylinders and pistons looks like:

Dirty four and some other parts:

We've also measured distance between the valves and pistons at TDC. Due to the intake valves the piston cutouts will need to be a bit deeper but the exhaust ones have enough clearance. Max lift with the standard valve springs was also measured and we will need to change them as they would cause coil-bound with the chosen cams at max lift.

One of very few 'proper' project threads on here.

Just noticed the EW12 head has a big E2 embossed onto the end. The EW10 has E0 on the end of it. Anybody know what the 180 has?

@Edward, I believe it has a E1 but I'm not sure, It's been a long time since I've seen one. Nicely spotted btw.

Okay let's get you guys up to speed. Not much has happened since last time I posted, but let me just list the stuff.

I bought 16 new hydraulic lifters as they seem to be causing problems for me on the current engine and I didn't want to take any chances with the new one. Also one of the original ones was already broken and two were stuck if I remember correctly.

Also the guys at JLD Performance are putting together a flow bench (for the obvious reason).

All the pistons have been cleaned and the engine block was also scrubbed. So it's all nice and shiny...sort of Smile

And now all the small parts are being bought like main bearings, piston rings, semerings, etc. Then we're moving on to the more expensive parts such as camshafts, springs pulleys.

So I'll keep you updated as much as possible.

Oh and by the way here a pic from a very nice afternoon trip:

This gti already multiplexed. So that speedo direct fitment for this car. And nearly impossible to work on preplexed cars.

Hey, long time no update Smile There were quite a few changes since the last update, but sadly the engine is still not in Sad Anyway, I will make an update shortly (preferably before new year lol)

@spike, as Schumi said its a plexed car so I only had to change the speedo. Don't know how much work would involve to put it in a preplexed one or if it's even possible :/
