Hey guys thanks for the replies took to a mechanic friend of mine and he said replace the axle outright so your advice was right but there are a whole load of age related problems just adding up to more than the value of my car

Sorry for the late reply and for reviving an old thread. There is no play I the arm but the wheel is now rubbing the inner arch when try to put my hand down the back of the wheel. So I think it more than likely must be he axle bearing. The only other think I've noticed is that there is movement in the tie bars with the SW having the same rear axle as the gti. But wouldnt think they would cause the wheel to lean in as much as it is. Another quick question. Is there an easy way to get at the fans relays without removing he front bumper? I know with the faults mounting up I would probably be better off with another car. But I've spent too much on it just to get rid of it.
